A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF UCC (2025)

A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF UCC (2025)

Paul Middlemiss30 Dec 2025 - 13:18

An historic year in many ways at Upminster Park

What a year it has been!! 100s of games played by our senior and junior sides, a first ever boys county competition victory, another brilliant Benefit Match with Essex and two keenly contested Windmill Whack competitions. Oh…………..and we also saw the redevelopment of the Upminster Park Pavilion into a state-of-the-art facility!!!

There was sadness as well, with two of our longest serving Vice Presidents, Colin Wright and Shirley Foss, passing away during the year. They will both be missed by many people involved with the club and by members of the wider Upminster community.

As we take a look back over the year, we must thank all members, colts, colts parents, Vice-Presidents, coaches, volunteers and friends of the club for their support and contribution in 2025. Playing more than 550 games of cricket in a year requires a lot of work from a lot of people, and at the end of 2025 we should take some time to reflect on the efforts of all those who make this happen.

Here are a few of the highlights from the last 12 months:

JANUARY
- Just a few days into the New Year and cricket returns with our junior sides in indoor action. The first weekend of 2025 sees six Central Indoor League games take place with the highlight being the U10s win over Bentley;

- The Women’s 1st XI come within a whisker of winning the European Cricket Series event hosted by neighbours Hornchurch at Harrow Lodge Park. - The wet weather also meant frustration for the Women’s 1st XI and the Matchplay XI on the following Sunday. For the women it denied them a chance to push for a top two place in the 100 with their games against Bishops Stortford both rained off, while for the Matchplay side the saturated outfield at Upminster Park meant their game against Rankins did not take place and they were denied the opportunity to progress to the knockout stages;

- The redeveloped pavilion nears its completion. All outside work is complete, including the new patio, the new scoreboard is in place and the new flooring is finished across the whole of the inside. Final interior work is being completed ahead of the new scheduled opening in mid-August;

AUGUST
- Kiran Kullar begins the month with a brilliant 116 not out for the 1st XI in their high scoring draw at OId Southendians. Upminster had looked set for victory for much of their pursuit of 306, with Adam Wheater also making 81, but they were forced to settle for a draw;
- Ollie Peck claims 6-39 as the 2nd XI secure a vital win over Billericay to move out of the relegation zone, while the 3rd XI stay in the title hunt with a win at Hornchurch. The 4th XI slide towards relegation after a loss to Billericay while the 5th XI win a crazy game at Orsett thanks to a brilliant partnership between Aedan Daly and Ryan Brown. The 6th XI win against Writtle while the 7th XI look in big trouble after a loss to Rayleigh;

- The group stage of Windmill Whack X ends with wins for the Griffin Grandmasters and the Kushoom Bugh Tigers. It meant the Grandmasters moved straight through to the Grand Final while the Tigers would face the Mullis and Peake Monarchs in the Eliminator;
- The Women’s 1st XI put in their best performance of the season to beat Colchester and East Essex by seven wickets and all but secure their Division One status for 2026. Meanwhile, a fine knock of 125 not out from Mo Ahmad is in vain as the Sunday League XI’s title chances are ended with a defeat at Goresbrook;

- It’s an amazing day for the club as the U12 Ultras beat Loughton to win the Brian Taylor Trophy at Felsted School. It is the first time an Upminster boys’ side had won a full county event. Max Barber claims 4-15 as Loughton were bowled out for 129 before captain William Peck struck 68 not out as Upminster won by eight wickets;
- Kiran Kullar is in the runs again as his 101 not out, along with a fine knock from Pulkit Gupta, sees the 1st XI move up to third in the table with a comfortable win over Gidea Park and Romford;
- The redeveloped pavilion is used for the first time as the changing rooms, bar area and scoreboard are all opened for the 2nd XI’s game with Ilford. It marks an historic moment for the club and the culmination of months of work and years of planning;
- Despite the pavilion opening the 2nd XI remain in relegation trouble after a loss to Ilford, despite 99 from Ross Taylor, while the 3rd XI’s title hopes are all but ended at Harold Wood. Meanwhile, the 4th and 7th XIs look set for the drop after losses to Oakfield Parkonians and St Johns respectively;
- The U19s hopes of glory at the Ravi Bopara Trophy Finals Day are ended by Bishops Stortford. Upminster set what looked like a competitive total of 173, but 100 from 45 balls from Max Sanderson, including nine maximums, saw Stortford win by six wickets;
- The Sunday League XI season finish their first season back in the Essex Sunday League with a thrilling win over Roding Valley. Kiran Kullar made a brilliant 152 and Zoran Suneel made 89 as Upminster made 306-6. The 4th XI keep alive their survival hopes with a win over Orsett and Thurrock but the 7th XI are relegated despite a win over Great Totham while the 6th end their season with a loss to Basildon and Pitsea but finish in a respectable seventh place;
- It’s a glorious end to the month for our junior sides, with three trophies secured in one day. The U10 Girls won the Central Girls U10 Cup with a fine win over Harold Wood at Great Baddow, while at the same time the U14 Ultras beat Brentwood by nine runs in a thrilling Central U14s Cup Final at Upminster Park. In the afternoon the U17s faced off against Harold Wood in the Central U17s Cup Final in front of a packed redeveloped Upminster Park Pavilion and the hosts put in a fine performance to cruise to an eight wicket win and retain the trophy. The U11 Girls put in a fine performance in the Central U11 Girls Cup Final before losing out to an excellent Hornchurch Athletic side;
- The Women’s 1st XI complete their league season with a five wicket loss at champions Bishops Stortford, but they pick up enough points to secure a highly respectable fourth place finish in Division One. - The 2nd XI do just about enough to secure their Premier Division survival despite losing at Billericay. However, results elsewhere mean they would have been safe anyway;
