Curtis rolls back years to boost 2nd XI

Despite a defeat for the 1st XI, it was an excellent afternoon for the club as a whole, with eight sides playing and some crucial wins picked up.  The biggest, and most crucial win of the day came at Upminster Park as the 2nd XI overcame Chingford to boost their hopes of Premier Division survival.  Upminster decided to bat first on an overcast afternoon and Mit Shah and Aki Rahman gave them a solid foundation at the top of the innings.  Ian Russell and Callum Berry then put together an excellent third wicket stand and after Berry fell the experienced pair of Russell and Terry Wyatt put Upminster in control.  Wyatt fell for 41 but Russell continued to look in fine form as he brought his half century and then began to accelerate, with good support from Adam Quested.  Upminster were nearing the 200 mark and looking to post a big total but a clatter of wickets halted their progress somewhat.  Finley Tolan gave Russell good support late on and the experienced left hander soon reached a brilliant century as Upminster went past the 250 mark.  Russell was eventually out for 111 but Upminster's total of 274 all out, looked a formidable one.  With rain clouds looming around Upminster Park, captain Ollie Peck opted to open the bowling with himself and the experienced John Curtis to ensure the game moved at a fast pace, but what followed was quite extraordinary.  Peck picked up a wicket in his first over and then Curtis, inspired maybe by the backdrop of the redeveloped Upminster Park pavilion, ripped through the Chingford batting line up.  Curtis claimed a remarkable 7-18 in a spell of just over eight overs, and with Peck picking up 3-13 Chingford were bowled out for just 32 in the eighteenth over.  The emphatic win moves Upminster to within touching distance of safety.

The 1st XI's winning run came to an end as they narrowly lost out in a thrilling game at Springfield.  Springfield decided to bat first, but Ollie Burley produced a fine burst for Upminster to pick up two early wickets and put his side on top.  However, Aarav Salil continued his fine form for Springfield and held the innings together, and his knock slowly began to put his side on top.  Chris Frost added 50 in the Springfield middle order, while Shafiq Rahman eventually dismissed Salil for an excellent 101 as Upminste ensured the run rate was kept in check by picking up regular wickets.  Captain Aaron Beard picked up 3-50 while Burley ended with 3-49 as the home side were bowled out in the final over for 248.  Mo Ahmad and Pulkit Gupta both made double figures at the top of the Upminster innings, and Kiran Kullar (43) and Gus Philpot then helped take their side to 107-2 and seemingly in a position of control.  Aarya Thomas then tilted things back Springfield's way as his four wicket burst saw Upminster slide to 139-6, before Aaron Beard began to find the boundary for Upminster to give his side hope once more.  Beard appeared to be steering his side to victory but having reached 67 he was bowled by Lee Brooks and Upminster were nine down with 24 still needed.  Rahman and Burley didn't give up though and they carefully kept their side in the game, reaching the start of the last over with seven needed for victory.  With three needed from the final two balls Brooks dismissed Rahman for 19 and it was Springfield who were able to celebrate a two run victory.

A comprehensive win at Ilford kept alive the 3rd XI's hope of reclaiming the Premier Division title.  Ilford decided to bat first on what looked like a challenging surface at Valentines Park, and Upminster's opening bowlers Ryan Oakes and Mark D'Cruz soon had their side on top with two early wickets.  Fahad Abbas stood firm for Ilford to try and keep his side in the game, but wickets kept falling as Ilford struggled.  On a day when a number of experienced players performed well throughout the club, veteran Andrew Berry added his name to the list with an excellent spell.  Berry picked up 4-19 to bring the Ilford innings to a rapid conclusion as the home side were bowled out for 106.  Upminster's chase was not without one or two alarms itself, but they reached their target with plenty of time to spare, winning by six wickets to take the title race into the final weekend of the season.

The 4th XI boosted their survival hopes with an excellent all round performance against Orsett & Thurrock at Coopers.  Orsett looked like they were getting into a good position as they reached 84-1, but all of Upminster's attack stuck to their task to keep the visitors run rate under control.  Nathan Brown's introduction into the attack saw Upminster then take control as the off-spinner produced yet another excellent spell, picking up 3-50 as Orsett were pegged back, with the visitors eventually ending their innings on 192-6.  That target looked like it may be a tricky one for the home side, but captain Matt Ingleson combined well with Ethan Berry for an opening stand of 57 before Berry fell for 38.  Will Frost then gave his captain good support as he made 40 in a second wicket stand of 76 and the captain soon brought up his half century to keep Upminster in control.  Stan Moore continued his recent good form with a well made 30 and Ingleson ended on an unbeaten 65 as his side cruised to a seven wicket win with plenty of overs to spare.

The 5th XI continued their good run with a win over Hornchurch 4s in the local derby at Campion.  Batting first it looked like Upminster were in a spot of bother at 23-2 before Matt Mccarthy and Oliver Ward (34) put together a third wicket stand of 54.  After Ward fell Harry Lawes gave Mccarthy good support and Mccarthy then reached his half century before falling for 64, but Avanish Ajmani and Lawes continued to take their side towards a good total.  Ajmani fell for 27 but Lawes ended unbeaten on 38 as Upminster closed on 209-8.  Ewan Lowrie and captain Aalok Latey picked up early wickets in the Hornchurch reply, while the experienced Robin Sen dug in to make 34 to keep his side in the game.  Ajmani removed Sen, and then Kevin Roome, another experienced campaigner, ran through the rest of the Hornchurch batting line up.  Roome claimed 4-43 as Hornchurch were bowled out for 106 as Latey's side moved up to fourth place in the table.

The 6th XI ended their first season in the Mid Essex League with a seventh place finish in Division 8, after a narrow loss at Basildon & Pitsea.  Meanan Ratnakumar (58) and Luke Daw (32) gave the Basildon innings an excellent start but two wickets each for WIll Court and Harry Bradford got Upminster back in the game.  Arslan Sidhu and Muhammad Ather struck some late blows for the home side who ended their innings on 217-8.  Gary Carr made 33 in the Upminster reply but at 46-5 it looked like an early finish was in prospect.  Thomas Brabin and Aadit Latey had other ideas though and produced a brilliant sixth wicket stand to get their back in the game.  Brabin blasted 76 from just 56 balls while Latey made his maiden senior half century as Upminster began to sense an unlikely victory, but when Brabin fell Basildon took control once more and Upminster were restricted to 193-9 as Basildon won by 24 runs.

Despite a final day win, results elsewhere meant the 7th XI finished the season in ninth place in Mid Essex League Division 9, and they will now have to see where they are placed for the 2026 season.  Opponents Great Totham made a solid but steady start to their innings at Broxhill Road, with Jack Ridge (32) and Paul Gregory (54) putting on 92 in 26 overs.  Sanjay Narbheram (2-27) finally made the breakthrough for Upminster, and although Totham only lost three wickets the Upminster attack stuck to their task superbly to limit Totham to 143-3.  Upminster lost a wicket in the first over of their reply before skipper Craig Grote and Ian Munn rapidly took Upminster to 50 without further loss.  With the threat of rain in the air Grote and Munn were in a hurry, and after Grote had fallen for 33 Munn continued to pepper the boundary fence as he reached a rapid half century.  Upminster did lose a third wicket before the end but Liam Robrteson came to the crease and finished things off quickly.  He ended on 19 not out and Munn finished unbeaten on 65 as Upminster won by seven wickets with more than half their overs to spare.

The Friendly XI enjoyed an excellent game against Brentwood at the De Rougemont Ground in Warley.  Zach Lawes (35), John Oakes (21) and Max Bird (27) were the main contributors in Upminster's 143, while James Williamson claimed 3-18 for the home side.  Williamson also made 29 in the Brentwood reply, but two wickets from Ollie Dignam kept Upminster in the game.  Upminster's attack (nine bowlers used) all performed well, but Brentwood picked up a five wicket win with 11 balls to spare.
