SATURDAY REVIEW - 6TH SEPTEMBER

2s survive, 4s go down and 3s miss out

It was a day of mixed emotions for the club as the league season concluded on Saturday afternoon. Three sides still had something to play for going into the last round of games and there were three very different endings for those sides.

The 2nd XI needed five points to be certain of maintaining their Premier Division status, and they picked up..............five points!!  BIllericay were asked to bat first by Upminster's stand-in skipper Terry Wyatt at Blunts Wall Road and the home batted consistently all the way through their innings to post 199-9 from their 45 overs.  John Curtis continued his good form with four wickets for Upminster.  The four bonus points picked up meant Upminster just needed one batting point (at 117) to be assured of safety, but they fell to 90-8 and 110-9 to leave themselves with work to do. Fortunately Scott Siimons and Finley Tolan kept their nerve and took Upminster past the required mark and on to 136 before they were bowled out.  Results elsewhere meant Upminster would have been safe anyway, but the side will want to avoid being in a similar position in 2026.

One team who did pick up a win and keep their side of the bargain was the 3rd XI, but despite their victory over Chingford they had to settle for third place as Brentwood and more significantly Harold Wood, secured their own wins to take the top two spots.  Chingford won the toss and asked Upminster to bat first at Coopers, but openers Steve Limn and Dan Simpson continued their excellent record this season with a fine opening partnership.    Both men reached their half centuries to lay a good platform for the rest of the batting line up, and there were then good contributions from Alex Ward, Rob Mack and Joshan Narbheram as Upminster posted 231.  Chingford batted solidly throughout their reply but never looked like chasing down their target, and they finished on 150-9 to give Upminster an 81 run victory. It meant Upminster finished third in the table, their 12th top three finish in the Premier Division since they began their unbroken 24 season run in the top division.

Unfortunately the 4th XI were relegated after their own loss at Hutton and Orsett's win over Gidea Park & Romford.  Ethan Berry, Will Frost, Nathan Brown, Stan Moore and Rob Healy all made good contributions, but Upminster were bowled out with more than three overs of their innings not used as they totalled 201.  Brown also took two wickets in the Hutton reply, but the home side were able to chase down their target with three overs to spare, before news filtered through that both sides had been relegated.

Elsewhere, the 1st XI secured third place in the table, for the second consecutive season, with a win over promoted Loughton at Upminster Park.  Aaron Beard chose to bowl first in damp conditions and he was rewarded as Max Carter-MIller picked up two early wickets to put Upminster on top.  Hamza Ahmed countered for Loughton and he received good support from captain Omar Akram as they took their side to 70-2.  Ollie Burley removed Akram for 28 but Ahmed went on to complete an excellent half century before Beard removed him for 61, and then there were late innings contributions from Gurveer Saini, Sagar Joshi and Qaim Shah which helped boost the Loughton total.  Burley, Carter-Miller and Nehal Butt all ended with two wickets for Upminster and Loughton ended on 269-9.  Pulkit Gupa and Mo Ahmad once again gave Upminster's chase a solid start with a stand of 57, and after Ahmad had fallen for 22 Kiran Kullar and Gupta took the score into three figures without further loss.  Gupta (42) and Kullar (34) both fell in quick succession, before Gus Philpot and Adam Wheater put together what turned out to be the match winning partnership.  The pair put together a stand of 116, at a very good rate, as Upminster looked to be cruising to victory, and Wheater brought up his half century with a four through long-on.  Philpot was caught at short fine leg for 36 and Upminster then lost four wickets for 26, including, Wheater for 82, as Loughton sensed a late chance of victory, but Nehal Butt kept his nerve and saw Upminster to a three wicket win with plenty of time to spare.

The 5th XI rounded off their season, and continued their good form, with a closing day win over Orsett and Thurrock.  Star of the show for Upminster was Avanish Ajmani who picked up five wickets in seven balls in a brilliant spell of left arm bowling (including a FOUR wicket maiden), and although Ollie O'Carroll made 44 for Orsett, the home side will have been pleased to bowl out their opponents for 177.  Upminster fell to 22-3 in reply before Ollie Ward and Alfie Taplin began to turn things around.  Upminster looked to be back in trouble at 74-5, but Taplin remained and brought up his half century before falling shortly after for 59.  At that stage the game was in the balance, but Matt Mccarthy and skipper Aalok Latey soon put Upminster in full control.  Mccarthy was the dominant partner, striking 52 not out from 39 balls, and with Latey ending unbeaten on 18, Upminster won by four wickets with nearly four overs to spare.
