1s win again while Taylor and Healy make tons

Aaron Beard and Mo Ahmad were the stars of the show as the 1st XI won consecutive league games for the first time this year.  The victory against Ilford was also their third win in four, and ensures that the side are looking ahead of them rather than over their shoulders as the halfway point of the season is reached.  Returning skipper Pulkit Gupta won the toss at Upminster Park and asked Ilford to bat first and he was then able to watch Aaron Beard tear through the visitors' top order.  Beard claimed five of the first seven wickets to fall as Ilford slumped to 105-7, with only Vishal Raj (39) making a substantial contribution.  Beard ended with figures of 5-62 and although Ilford recovered somewhat, with Haaris Ayub making 32 not out, Nehal Butt helped to mop up the tail as the visitors were bowled out for 161.

Gupta was out to the first ball of the Upminster reply, and Beard followed soon after with Theeban Tavarasa claiming both wickets, but Ahmad and Adam Wheater settled things down.  They added 41 for the third wicket before Wheater fell for 25 to leave things in the balance at 63-3.  Ahmad remained calm at the other end as the wickets were falling, and he found a willing partner in Tom Daniels, a man who has been in fine form all summer.  Ahmad was in a more aggressive mood than in previous weeks and reached his half century as the total reached three figures and the pairing looked to be taking Upminster to a comfortable win.  Daniels fell for 35 with just 23 needed for victory, and Ian Russell joined Ahmad and ensured there was no further panic.  Russell ended on 12 not out and Ahmad finished on a brilliant unbeaten 75 as Upminster won by six wickets with plenty of time to spare.

The 2nd XI had to settle for a second consecutive draw as they were held by Ilford at Valentines Park.  However, unlike last week's draw at Harold Wood, where it was Upminster who were forced to cling on, Ollie Peck's men had the better of this contest and were a little unlucky not to pick up maximum points.  Peck decided to bat first on winning the toss and Mit Shah and the returning Gus Siggins helped take the total to 117-1. Siggins fell for 39 but Shah brought up his half century before falling to Kamaljit Singh for 60.  Singh went on to take 5-79 but Callum Berry, Terry Wyatt and John Curtis ensured Upminster remained on course for a competitive score. Adam Quested then added a breezy 34 not out as Upminster were able to post 233-8.  Peck, Curtis and Ollie Burley all struck early in the Ilford reply to leave the home side four down before Gaurav Nair and Pronob Roy put together an impressive partnership for the fifth wicket.  The pair looked like they may be putting their side in a position to push for victory before Peck removed both men, Nair for 93 and Roy for 62.  It was Upminster pushing for victory again at this point, with Peck running through the rest of the middle order, but the Ilford tail dug in.  Peck ended with 5-51 but the home side were able to hold on for the draw at 195-8.

Ross Taylor was the star of the show for the 3rd XI as they beat Ilford at Coopers to remain very much in the title race.  Taylor made a remarkable 163 not out as his side powered to a victory and the maximum 25 points.  Ilford won the toss and decided to field, and that looked a good decision as Upminster fell to 48-4, with only Dan Simpson from the top order making a meaningful contribution. It was at this point that Taylor took control, firstly in partnership with Michael Pedrick .  Taylor was quickly into his groove and striking the ball to all parts of the ground, and although Pedrick fell for 40 Taylor upped the pace even more in his partnership with Alex Ward.  Ward, renowned for his own destructive batting, was forced to play second fiddle to Taylor who continued his blistering attack as Upminster looked to set a big target.  Ward went for 18 with the score on 191, and Taylor soon brought up his century with another boundary.  Ewan Lowrie, Ryan Oakes and Mark D'Cruz were able to stand at the other end and admire Taylor's work as he accelerated once more in the last ten overs.  Taylor ended on 163 not out from 125 balls and Upminster closed on 301-8.  Ilford never looked likely to chase down that target, but the home side had to work hard to ensure they picked up maximum points.  Ollie Clarke picked up three wickets, and D'Cruz continued his fine season with three of his own, while Ryan Oakes also claimed a brace of victims as Upminster bowled out the visitors with a handful of overs to spare to secure the win.

Rob Healy nearly matched Taylor as the 4th XI played out a high scoring draw with Gidea Park and Romford at Gallows Corner.  Park won the toss and decided to bowl, but they may have regretted that decision as Healy and Rob Mack put together an excellent second wicket partnership.  Mack clearly relished the opportunity to bat higher up the order and was in a more aggressive mood from the start of his innings.  He made 83 from just 54 balls and dominated the partnership of 108 between him and Healy.  When Mack departed Healy took control and it became clear that the boundaries on Park's second ground were not big enough for the former Belhus man.  Nathan French (31) and Stan Moore provided good support for Healy and then Avanish Ajmani showed his power towards the end of the innings.  Healy brought up his ton from just 71 balls and he and Ajmani then proceeded to take the game away from the home side.  Healy ended on a brilliant 143 not out and Ajmani on 41 not out as Upminster declared six overs early on 343-4.  Even with 51 overs to bat that target was always going to be a tough one for Park, but Upminster's attack stuck to their task and chipped away at the wickets column.  Shrey Shah and Thomas Cargill picked up two wickets each, but Park batted stoutly to end on 248-7.

The 5th XI fell to a derby defeat against Hornchurch in a thrilling game at Cromer Road.  Ian Munn made 48 before Ollie Ward and Ben Calder both made half centuries.  Calder made 70 from just 60 balls while Ward continued his excellent season with 55 as Upminster took control.  There were also late runs for Adam Overton and Ollie Hinton as Upminster posted a more than competitive 257-7.  Home opener George Clark lost his opening partner to Ryan Brown early on, but Clark looked in fine form himself as he kept his side up with the run rate.  George Fletcher and Ravi Joshi gave Clark good support, and although Brown bowled well to claim 2-39 the home side remained in control of the chase.  Clark reached his century and then went on to finish on an unbeaten 132 as the home side won by six wickets with three balls to spare.

There was also a narrow defeat for the 6th XI as they lost out to Hatfield Peverel 2s in Division 8 of the Mid Essex League.  Trevor Lenoir made 64 for Peverel, but Upminster's attack did well to stay on top of the visitors batting.  Harry Bradford and Lois Gable picked up two wickets each and Aadit Latey produced an impressive spell as Peverel made 209-7.  Captain Ray Calder, Ed Knight and Will Court gave the Upminster reply a solid start and after a small clatter of wickets Liam Robertson (23) upped the run rate as did Harry Bradford.  Bradford has been in fine form this season and once again showed his all round prowess with another fine innings.  He made 73 from 53 balls and looked to be taking his side to victory before falling to James Osborne (3-32).  Chris Brabin did his best to keep Upminster on track with 22 not out, but the home side just ran out of gas and ended on 199-7 to lose by ten runs.

A fine all round performance from the 7th XI gave them their best result of the season at Hutton 4s, in Mid Essex League Division 9.  Home openers Ian Crispin and Daniel Payne gave Hutton a solid start, but once they had both fallen to the spin of Anay Narbheram it was Upminster who took control.  Narbheram went on to claim 4-22 while Karim Govani picked up two wickets to keep Upminster on top.  Chris Payne and Joe Hills both made contributions in the middle order to try and get their side back in the game, but Woody Treadwell finished things off with 2-10 as Hutton were bowled out for 131.  Daniel Rickard's first over of the reply put Upminster on the back foot as Paul Middlemiss and Paul Burley were dismissed without troubling the scorers, but George Sheridan and Matt Burch knuckled down and got the Upminster chase moving.  Burch made 35 before falling to Elena Dale while Sheridan looked in control as Upminster neared the winning line.  Captain Craig Grote continued his good form with 24 not out while Sheridan ended on an excellent unbeaten 47 as Upminster won by seven wickets.

There was also a fine win for the Friendly XI as they overcame Basildon and Pitsea 6th XI. Harry Coles and Kieran McWilliam both picked up two wickets as Basildon were restricted to 196-7. The Twines, Ian and Sam, put together an excellent partnership to start the Upminster reply. Sam made 50 not out before retiring to go and cause delays on the local train network, while father Ian made 43. Coles and Jack Hayward kept things ticking in the middle order before McWilliam and Aahad Bhatti saw Upminster to a six wicket win.
