WINDMILL WHACK IX – FINALS DAY

WINDMILL WHACK IX – FINALS DAY

Paul Middlemiss5 Sep 2024 - 12:42

Three teams go for glory this Sunday (8th Sept)

After four months of action, just three teams remain in contention for Windmill Whack glory, as the competition reaches its climax this Sunday (8th Sept).

The group stage of the competition was keenly contested as always, and it was the Apple Finance Firebirds who topped the league table and therefore advanced straight to this Sunday’s Grand Final (4.00pm). “The Birds” won all of their group games with one exception, their washed-out game against the Elite Eagles at the start of July. Captain Max Carter Miller has ensured “The Birds” have played an exciting brand of cricket throughout the season, and he will be hoping he can lead them to their first Whack title since 2021.

The Eliminator (1.00pm) will be contested by the Elite Eagles and the Mullis & Peake Monarchs. The Eagles suffered two rain offs earlier in the competition which meant that despite not having lost a game, they needed at least one win on Bank Holiday Weekend to secure their place at Finals Day. Fortunately, they picked up two victories to secure second place in the table and confirm their participation in the Eliminator. The Eagles made Finals Day in 2022 and 2023 but are yet to lift the trophy, so captain and franchise owner Daniel Tyler will hope it’s third time lucky on Sunday.

Facing the Eagles will be the Mullis & Peake Monarchs. After a disastrous 2023, the Monarchs have been revitalised under the stewardship of James Burchell. Burchell’s side secured their place at the big day with two wins in their mid-August double header against the Govani Maestros and the Hunter Hurricanes.

The bar will be open from midday on Sunday (for those not suffering from Saturday evening**) and hopefully the sun will shine to help make this yet another memorable end to the Windmill Whack season.

The Windmill Whack Women’s Edition final will take place on the morning of the Benefit Match (15th September). The Burley Bandits, looking for their first title, will take on the Apple Finance Phoenix, who after this Sunday may be looking to make it a Whack double. The two sides face-off at 10.30am.

**This weekend will see the conclusion of the senior league season, so to celebrate the end of another great summer, why not get along to the Neon End of Season Party at the Club. Bring your glow sticks as things get underway from 7.30pm.
