Billy Wright piles up astonishing 157,000 steps as challenge gets underway

The first edition of the Windmill Walk got under way this week as 209 members, colts, colts parents, Vice Presidents and friends of the club took to the streets of Upminster, and beyond, in a bid to each walk one million steps by the first weekend of the season.

Leading the way and taking the Individual Stage 1 honours was 1st XI bowler Billy Wright. Billy reeled in long time leader and Chairman, Ollie Peck, to finish on an astonishing 157,000 steps!! Coach Simmons continued to set an excellent example as he finished in second place, ahead of Derek Petrie in third. Scott Fisher recorded 139,000 steps to finish in fourth, just ahead of Toni Woodgate who was our highest finishing lady and fifth overall.

In the Team event there was a huge shock as the Chairman’s Choice took first place. Having looked hopelessly unfit during the summer’s Windmill Whack, the Choice finished on an average of 10,000 steps each over the first seven days to top the table. They held off stern challenges from the Ace Avengers (an average of 9,790) and the Kushoom Bugh Tigers (an average of 9,650).

Week 2 has now begun as all 209 competitors strive to reach one million steps before the season starts. The Windmill Walk is already proving a great way for everyone involved with the club to keep fit and get some much needed fresh air during the winter lockdown.
