1st XI impress once more as they pick up second win

It was another positive weekend for most of the club's senior sides with the 1st XI leading the way with an impressive win over Billericay at Upminster Park. The visitors won the toss and chose to bat first but lost the dangerous Grant Roelofsen early on when he was caught at the wicket off the bowling of Max Carter-Miller. Wickets for Shafiq Rahman, Aaron Beard and JJ Smuts saw Ricay fall to 73-4 before a fifth wicket partnership between Will Dale and Jarred Lysaught got their side back in the game. Ollie Burley dismissed Dale for 55 to claim one of his two wickets but Lysaught went on to make a fine century as Billericay moved towards a big score. Lysaught was eventually run out for 116 and with Rahman (3-49) claiming some late wickets the visitors were all out from the last ball of the innings for 266. Pulkit Gupta fell for 12 at the start of the Upminster reply but Smuts and Kiran Kullar began to put Upminster on top with an excellent second wicket stand. The pair had added 124 when Smuts was given out LBW for 73 from 61 balls. Kullar fell soon after for 57 to leave the game in the balance but Gus Philpot and Adam Wheater got the chase back on track with a stand of 41 before both men fell in quick succession to once again leave things on a knife-edge. Captain Aaron Beard joined Tom Daniels and with Beard immediately finding the boundary Upminster nerves began to disappear as the finish line came into sight. Callum McDonald picked up two late wickets, including that of Beard, but Tom Daniels kept his head to finish on 23 not out as Upminster won by three wickets with just over four overs to spare.

The 2nd XI fell to a defeat at Brentwood as their winless start to the season continued. Upminster skipper Ollie Peck chose to bat first at the Old County Ground, and he may have been regretting that decision when Aki Raham fell for a duck. However, the returning Stu Connor combined with Arun Kullar to get Upminster back in the game Their second wicket partnership had reached 117 when Connor was dismissed for 60. Kullar fell shortly after for 46 as Upminster went from 118-1 to 169-8 to leave themselves in big trouble. Gus Siggins made 23 and Scott Simmons made 17, but with nobody else making double figures Peck's side were only able to scramble to a below par 196 all out. John Curtis struck in the first over to give Upminster early hope as Brentwood began the chase before Josh Knightsbridge and Gabe Austin put their side into a strong position at 103-2. Peck removed Knightsbridge for 66 as Upminster began to come back into the game but Austin stood firm to keep his side on track. Peck claimed 3-32 but by the time Vansh Mehra removed Austin Brentwood were nearly there, and they duly completed a three wicket win with more than eight overs remaining.

The 3rd XI continued their positive start to the season with another good all-round performance to beat Woodford Wells. Veteran opener Steve Limn made 62 and in partnership with George Sheridan (49) he helped put Upminster into a strong position. That partnership of 98 laid the foundation for Stan Moore to come to the crease and play one of his most impressive senior knocks to date. Moore struck a brilliant 86 to power Upminster towards a big total, and with his good friend Joseph Brooks making 37 the home side finished on 264-6. Upminster began in fine style with the ball as Fin Tolan (3-29) and Mark D’Cruz took early wickets to leave Wells in big trouble. However, Will Rogers remained at the crease and found a willing partner in Thomas Mead (30) as the pair got their side back in the game. Brooks produced a fine spell (3-43) to work his way through the middle-order, but Rogers reached three figures to keep his side in with a chance. Tolan finally removed Rogers for 115 and Wells eventually finished on 198-8 to give Upminster a comfortable win.

There was a second successive win for the 4th XI as they produced a terrific fightback to win at Hadleigh and Thundersley. Alastair Graham produced a fine spell for the home side, taking 5-28, and he did eventually dismiss Ethan Berry for one of those five wickets, but not before Berry had played the game’s standout innings. The young opener made 64 from 50 balls, the value of the innings emphasised by the fact that only one other player scored more than 20 all day, and that was Ethan’s Dad Andrew, whose 28 helped lift the Upminster total to 144 all out. Upminster may have been worrying whether that score was enough, but once Aedan Daly had removed both Hadleigh openers the result was never in doubt. Fenton Everingham (3-12) bowled superbly to run through the middle order while Harry Bradford picked up 2-2 as the home side were bowled out for just 80.

The 5th XI also made it two wins from two with a comfortable victory over Shenfield at Campion. Rob Evans was the star with the ball for Upminster, claiming 4-14 in an eight over spell to put his side on top, and Dylan Narbheram then picked up 2-25 as Shenfield were bundled out for just 99. Ian Munn and skipper Adam Overton (27) got the Upminster reply off to a solid start and after a slight wobble Patrick Gulvin (26) batted sensibly to take his side towards the finish line. Gulvin fell just before the win was sealed, but Munn remained to the end, finishing on 42 not out as Upminster won by seven wickets.

The 6th XI made it three wins from three in the Mid-Essex League with victory at Hutton. All of Hutton’s top order made good contributions with the bat, especially Thomas Overington who made 58. However, Anay Narbheram’s excellent 3-24 kept Upminster in the game as Hutton closed on 219-5. Openers Mark Hortop and Kayhan Suneel both made 30 at the start of the reply before Thomas Brabin continued his excellent season with a fine innings. Brabin made an excellent 77 not out from 63 balls and with skipper Craig Grote adding 24 Upminster cruised to a five wicket win with more than five overs to spare.

It was a tough afternoon for the 7th XI who were on the wrong end of an extraordinary innings from Great Totham’s George Davis. Davis made 200 not out from just 114 balls to help pilot Totham towards a big total. Upminster’s young bowlers stuck to their task well despite the blitz, with Oscar Hayes, Chris Brabin and Anotidaishe Chifamba all picking up two wickets as Totham closed on 335-7. Upminster were unfortunate to lose opener Billy Sheridan to injury at the start of their innings but Hayes and Oscar Sousanna both batted superbly in the middle order as Upminster fought bravely. Hayes made 53 and Sousanna 51, both players’ first senior fifties, and with Chifamba adding 22 Upminster did well to make 192.

The Friendly XI beat the tides to make it to West Mersea and pick up a win in their friendly encounter. Aiden McNeela (21) and Elliot Russell (22) both batted well before Max Bird (52*) and Eddie Waters (50*) both brought up their maiden senior half centuries with brilliant innings. Both players retired not out on reaching the landmark and Joshua O’Sullivan then added an unbeaten 33 as Upminster closed on 236-7. Captain Matt McArthur picked up two wickets in the Mersea innings, while there were also wickets for seven other bowlers, including maiden senior scalps for Henry Madsen and Aidan Leung, as the home side ended on 84-9.

Sunday saw the Friendly XI in action at Upminster Park as they took on Newham. Patrick Gulvin (47), George Sheridan (38) and Matt McArthur (23*) all made good contributions with the bat, but the star of the show was Lewis Munn who made 66 from 50 balls as Upminster made 259. Ralph Burchell, Paul Burley and Max Bird all then took two wickets apiece as Newham were bowled out for 87.
