THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING – MATT INGLESON

Paul Middlemiss1 Apr - 07:35

Skipper hoping for immediate return to Div One

With just a couple of weeks to go until the new season it’s time to catch up with our senior captains for 2026. Over the next two weeks we will be checking-in with the 11 players who will be leading our senior sides this summer. We’ll hear about their plans for the months ahead, what games they are looking forward to and what they have been up to over the winter months.

We've already heard from three of our skippers, Don Triggs, Craig Grote and Adam Overton, and we now catch up with someone about to start their second season in the role, 4s captain Matt Ingleson.

So you are back for a second season as 4s skipper. How are you looking forward to the season??
I am very excited to continue the captaincy this year. I absolutely loved it last year despite the results. The feeling of winning the games we did was amazing and I want to have that feeling even more this year.

Last year was a tough one for the side which ended in relegation. What did you learn about yourself and the team??
Last year was really tough with a lot of tight games not going our way but I think I learned quite a lot. For one, I hadn't captained much before so just knowing what to do in certain situations was difficult to begin with, but now going into the season i think the decisions I make will be a lot easier.

It's the first time the side has been back at this level since 2017. What are your aims for the season??
Getting relegated was really tough and obviously not the greatest start for my captaincy personally. But being in a slightly easier league, hopefully those tight results can start to go our way, and of course the aim is the come straight back up by winning the league.

Despite relegation last year your own stats with the bat were very impressive. Have you been working on your game over the winter??
I had a decent year with the bat but I always want to be improving. Some of my innings were a little slow and I've been working on just trying to limit the dot balls. I absolutely love batting!! To keep getting better is always the aim.

We don't see much of you in RM14 between September and April. What else have you been up to??
I have a lot going on in the off season as I am studying law in Norwich at UEA so for the most part I am there. I get to train a lot there as well with some excellent coaches which is great. The highlight though this winter was getting to go "Down Under" to watch the Ashes. Despite some dreadfully poor results it was an absolute blast, with the win in Melbourne being the cherry on top.
