Despite a tough start to life in the Mid-Essex League last season, the 7th XI finished strongly under the leadership of Craig Grote to secure their place in DIvision Nine for the 2025 season. We caught up with Craig to speak about last season's memories and what his plans are for 2025.
Last year ended up as a solid season, despite a tough start. What memories do you have of the summer, both personally and in terms of the team?
I think as far as the team are concerned it would have to be the away win at Chignal, but on a personal level it would have to be finishing the lovely tea at Hatfield Peverel then going out to make 50!! I just can't stop thinking about them coronation chicken sandwiches!!
The side did well last season with a number of youngsters coming into the side. How do you see the team evolving this season?
Hopefully all of the youngsters I had in the side last season will move up now and start to work their way through the sides. So I'm looking forward to welcoming some fresh faces into the team this summer.
How are you looking to build on last season and what are your objectives for 2025, both individually and collectively?
As far as the team is concerned the main objective is that they all enjoy their Saturdays playing cricket. My own objective is not to listen to Burley (Paul) and Sanjay (Narbheram) moan at me for having a shower after the game!!
How has the winter treated you and how has pre-season gone?
Well, West Ham have been awful all winter, so following them up and down the country has been a slog!! As for pre-season............it's not something I partake in.
Any games you are particularly looking forward to this season?
I'm genuinely looking forward to every home game. Up the top of the hill at Broxhill Road where we are lucky enough to play, has always been one of my favourite grounds.
