The Women's 1st XI stayed in the EWPL Division One title race with a tense victory over Colchester & East Essex on Sunday afternoon. Colchester decided to make first use of a flat wicket at a sweltering Upminster Park but Upminster made a strong start as the visitors fell to 68-3 with Emma Black, Harri Goodey and Dani Cox claiming the wickets. Emily Eves and Rebecca Neill took the score into three figures before Neill fell to Goodey for 22 and Eves then combined with Natalie Samaranayake in a stand of 129 which took the visitors towards a big score. Samaranayake fell to Paige Roche for 29 but Eves brought up her century at the end of the innings, finishing on 100 not out as Colchester totalled 238-5. Harri Goodey and Black started the chase at a frantic rate, putting on 75 in less than ten overs before Goodey was run out for 37 but Black and captain Zoe Quested kept the chase ahead of the required run rate and after Quested fell for 25 Roche and Black continued in the same vein. At 165-2 Upminster looked to be cruising to victory but after Roche fell for 20 and Black was dismissed for 83 two further wickets fell quickly and the game was back in the balance with Upminster at 182-6. Cox and Alex Goodey didn't panic though, and with the required run rate under control they were able to build a partnership and take their side towards victory. Goodey made 35 not out and Cox finished unbeaten on 25 as Upminster won by four wickets with nine balls to go.
Meanwhile, the Women's 2nd XI fell to defeat at Benfleet in EWPL Division Two. Upminster asked Benfleet to bat first upon winning the toss and Louise Mabey and Olivia Spells put on 44 for the first wicket, which would go on to be the highest partnership of the match. Captain Angela Green made the breakthrough when she bowled Mabey for 20 and Upminster were soon on top as the home side fell to 94-4 when Jemma Creswell dismissed Spells for 34. Benfleet recovered somewhat to reach 120-5 when Lauren Plumb came back into the attack. Plumb claimed four wickets (4-26) to run through the Benfleet lower order as the home side were bowled out for 167, with Amelie List making 28. Jamie Armes (28), veteran Emma Noller (19) and Holly Minney (13) put Upminster into a good position in reply at 85-3 but from that point the innings fell away. Mabey and Lily Turner-Brown ran through the Upminster middle and lower order with the last seven wickets falling for 10 runs as the visitors were bowled out for 95 to lose by 72 runs.
The Friendly XI lost a thrilling game in the sunshine at neighbours Hornchurch. Upminster won the toss and decided to bat, and that looked like a bad decision as they fell to 47-6 with an early finish looking likely. However, Ryan Oakes (41), George Sherdian (23), Harry Bradford and John Oakes led an Upminster recovery and they were eventually bowled out for 169 with Charlie Burd taking 5-16 for the home side. Hornchurch calmly made their way to 39-0 at the start of the reply before two quick wickets from Sheridan got Upminster back in the game. Max Bird and John Oakes also picked up two wickets each as the home side fell to 99-8 and at that stage an Upminster win looked the most likely result but Mush Mahin and Fletcher Felton put on 31 for the ninth wicket before Felton fell to Bradford. George Clark joined Mahin with 40 still needed but the pair kept their nerve to see Hornchurch to a one wicket win.
There were also a number of junior games throughout the day with wins for the U8 Ultras, U9 Ultimate, U11 Girls and U12 Ultimate (by one wicket), while there were losses for the U10 Ultras and U13 Ultimate.
