Matchplay success but defeat for Women's 2s

Despite a number of good individual performances and periods of the game where they were on top, the Women's 2nd XI fell to a 50 run loss against Hutton at Coopers on Sunday. Upminster won the toss and chose to bowl and Lauren Plumb made an early breakthrough with Jami Armes taking the catch. Chami Vidyaratne and Molly Morris responded with an excellent second wicket partnership before the introduction of Keya Shah into the Upminster attack changed the course of the innings. Shah removed Morris for 36 before following this up next ball by bowling Abi Tragen, and with skipper Angela Green dismissing Vidyaratne for 45 Hutton were suddenly 99-4. Shah hadn't finished though, and three further wickets for the young seamer meant she returned figures of 5-15 and the visitors were in big trouble at 104-7. Smitha Martina Martin Louis then led the Hutton recovery sharing a stand of 29 for the eighth wicket and then finding a more than capable partner for the ninth wicket in Abigail Little. Upminster had no answer to the ninth wicket pairing with Martin Louis ending 60 not out and Little finishing unbeaten on 20 as the visitors posted 218-8. Martin Louis then continued her excellent afternoon by picking up three wickets at the start of the Upminster reply before Georgia Hayes and Shah combined to get their side back in the game. Hayes reached her half century and Upminster looked in a good position at 119-4 before the experienced batter fell for 58 but Shah and Green kept Upminster in control as they reached 153-5. However, Green and Shah (39) both fell to Morris who then went on to claim 5-29 as Upminster collapsed to 168 all out to lose by 50 runs.

There was better news at Upminster Park as the Matchplay team beat Harold Wood to edge closer to the knockout stages of the Trevor Bailey Matchplay. Upminster decided to bowl first upon winning the toss and Wood never recovered from an early double strike from Finley Tolan. Tolan went on to claim 3-20 and although Gurmaan Singh and Tanishq Miriyala showed some resistance, three wickets from Dylan Narbheram (3-26) helped bowl Wood out for 140. Any worries that Upminster may produce a nervy chase were banished by George Sherdian and Alife Taplin who put on 74 for the first wicket in a little over 12 overs. Sheridan went for 31 but Taplin continued to go on the offensive and once he and Will Court had added 29 for the third wicket the result was not in doubt. Singh picked up 3-33 for Wood but it was Taplin and Upminster's day, the keeper/opener finishing on 58 not out as Upminster cruised to a six wicket win.

There were also junior victories for our U9 Ultimate, U11 Girls, U13 Girls, U14 Ultras and U14 Ultimate as well as a narrow loss for our U12 Ultimate. Our U9 Girls also played in an excellent KWIK Cricket Festival at Galleywood where they won their four matches and had a brilliant morning.
