Inspired by stunning spells from Lois Gable and Dani Cox, Upminster's Women's 1st XI moved into title contention with a brilliant fightback to beat Wanstead & Snaresbrook at Upminster Park on Sunday afternoon. Wanstead had earlier asked Upminster to bat first having won the toss, and the home side made a solid start through Paige Roche and Dani Cox. Roche (37) dominated an opening stand of 43 before Wanstead fought back as Upminster fell to 70-3. Felicity Russell and captain Zoe Quested then put Upminster back on top as they put together a fourth wicket stand of 73 with both players finding the boundary at regular intervals and the pair running well between the wickets to put the pressure on to the visitors. Quested fell for 43 before Russell brought up her half century only to fall shortly afterwards for 52, but Emma Black made 30 from 19 just deliveries to take Upminster to the 200 mark. The home side eventually closed on 202-8 with Zaynah Rehman claiming 3-33 for Wanstead. Black and Quested then struck early in the Wanstead reply before Rehman and Lucinda Foster took Wanstead into a strong position at 132-2. Gable's introduction into the attack then changed the game as she removed Foster and Dipti Puthawala in quick succession before Cox nabbed a brace to really give Upminster hope. While Rehman remained Wanstead would still have been thinking of victory but when she was run out for 89 Upminster were closing in on the points. Gable (3-19) and Cox (4-22) ran through the lower order as Wanstead were bowled out for 150 to give Upminster a 52 run win.
It was a tougher afternoon for the 2nd XI who fell to defeat at Kelvedon & Feering. Having chosen to bat first Upminster were then blown away by Kelvedon, with number 11 Julie Hand the only Upminster batter to make it into double figures as the visitors were bowled out for 69 with Lucy Callander picking up 3-10. Kelvedon flew out of the blocks in reply and although Mila Price bowled excellently to claim 2-10 the home side won by eight wickets with Sally Burnford making 33.
The Friendly XI won an exciting contest at neighbours Hornchurch with Dylan Brooks making an excellent 83. Upminster had won the toss and chosen to bat first and alongside Brooks' excellent innings there were also runs for Ollie Clarke (39) and Ryan Oakes (55). Stanley Murray and Ollie Farquhar claimed two wickets each for the home side as Upminster closed on 236-7. Billy Whitlock smashed 67 from 44 balls to put Hornchurch into a good position in reply but Upminster kept taking wickets to stay in the game and when Oakes picked up the crucial wicket Upminster closed in on victory. Home skipper George Clark made 48 not out to give his side late hope but it was Upminster who claimed victory with Brooks, John Oakes and Ewan McArthur all claiming two wickets each as Hornchurch closed on 216-9.
