Women's sides fall to defeats

Hutton took the honours at Upminster Park on Sunday, putting in a good all round performance to beat the Women's 1st XI in Division 1 of the Essex Premier League.  Having won the toss and elected to field first Upminster took the upper-hand early on, with Keya Shah and skipper Zoe Quested reducing Hutton to 12-2.  However, a third wicket stand of 129 between Erica Hobson and Sophie Wilson put Hutton in control.  Harri Goodey broke the partnership when she dismissed Hobson for 69, but Wilson continued in partnership with Georgie Manek as Hutton moved towards a big score.  Wilson soon brought up her century as Hutton raced past the 200 mark and Manek reached her half century soon after.  Wilson ended unbeaten on 127 and Manek was 60 not out as Hutton closed on 280-3.  Goodey and Georgia Hayes gave Upminster a solid start in reply, but two wickets from Manek saw the home side then fall to 58-3.  Flick Russell (25) and Dani Cox (32) both boosted the Upminster chase before Lois Gable (20) helped keep things moving. The run rate required was now climbing, with Harriet Robinson (3-40) producing a fine spell for Hutton, but Keya Shah didn't give up the fight.  She struck an excellent 46 from 34 balls before falling to Robinson.  Shah's dismissal all but ended Upminster's hopes and they closed on 179-8.

Meanwhile, the 2nd XI fell to a narrow defeat in their Division 2 contest at Orsett & Thurrock.  Caitlin Smith picked up an early wicket for Upminster on her return to action before Orsett's second wicket pairing of Eliza Winckless and Lola McCarthy put their side into a good position.  McCarthy's dismissal to a run out gave Upminster an opening and they seized the opportunity to get on top. Captain Angela Green claimed three wickets and Maisie Coles picked up a brace as Orsett lost wickets regularly, but Winckless remained defiant and would not be moved.  The Orsett opener nearly batted the entire innings before being dismissed by Green for 52 and Orsett were bowled out from the last ball of their 30 overs for 124.  Ella Allen (3-20) did the early damage to the Upminster batting in their reply, but opener Alexandra Goodey looked in good form and kept Upminster in the game.  Emma Poskitt and Winckles picked up three wickets each to run through the Upminster middle order and when Poskitt removed Goodey for a brilliant 50 it looked like Orsett would win by some distance.  However, last pair Priya Somani and Eadi French gave Upminster brief hope with a defiant last wicket stand before Allen claimed the last wicket as Upminster were all out for 99.

There was a victory on Monday night for the Women's Softball Team as they won their Central Conference Softball League match at Hornchurch Athletic by 91 runs to remain top of the table.
