Women's sides suffer losses but Matchplay team win thriller

It was a tough afternoon for our women's sides as the 1st XI suffered two losses in their latest 100 Double Header against Wanstead and Snaresbrook at Nutter Lane.  Game 1 of the day saw Wanstead win the toss and bat first, and they piled up a big score thanks to 68 from Deetya Padala and 59 from Dipti Puthawala.  Coco Thomas and Lois Gable picked up a wicket each for Upminster, but Wanstead posted 156-2 from their 100 balls.  Opener Harriet Goodey made 32 in the Upminster reply, but it wasn't until Lois Gable (27) came in at six that anyone else was able to make a contribution as Upminster finished on 71-5.  Upminster batted first in Game 2 and Keya Shah batted throughout the innings for an excellent 39 not out.  Gable was in the runs again with 25 not out and Upminster were able to post a competitive 106-4.  Gable then picked up an early wicket in the Wanstead reply, and Thomas claimed two more as Upminster fought hard to stay in the game.  However, Padala and Keya Patel put together an excellent fourth wicket partnership to take their side to victory with 16 balls to spare.

Meanwhile, at Coopers the 2nd XI lost out to high-flying BIllericay.  Billericay won the toss and decided to bat first, but it was Upminster who made a fast start as Lauren Plumb struck with the first ball of the game.  Unfortunately that was the high point of the afternoon as Rebecca Park and Gia Wilkins took full advantage of the batting friendly conditions.  Angela Green removed Wilkins for 37 and Claudia Brunt picked up a wicket soon after as Upminster fought back, but Park continued to pepper the boundary rope and soon brought up her century from just 74 balls.  Park retired on reaching the milestone, but Amrit Kaur and Maisie Jones continued the onslaught as the burning conditions carried on.  Kaur ended on 55 not out and Jones on an unbeaten 29 as Billericay closed on 270-3 from their 30 overs. Upminster fell to 71-4 in reply, but the experienced duo of Emma Noller and Karen Burley held things together.  They added 31 for the fifth wicket before Burley fell for 30. Upminster's lower order showed plenty of fight as they battled to use all of their allocation, but they were bowled out in the very last over for 119.

The Matchplay side won a thrilling contest at Upminster Park against Brentwood.  With the game reduced to 30 overs per side Upminster picked up early wickets to put themselves on top, but Sam Stroud and Jack Carpenter rebuilt with a crucial stand in the middle order.  Upminster countered once more with Aedan Daly, Ollie Clarke and Ewan Lowrie picking up two wickets each, but late runs from Stanley Boon meant Brentwood were able to use their full allocation, ending on 154-9.  The Upminster innings followed a similar pattern as the home side found themselves 67-4 but Clarke and Thomas Cargill began to put their side on top.  Clarke was run out for 29 and Cargill fell for 24, before Ollie Hinton kept Upminster in control despite falling for 27.  The run rate required began to climb but Fenton Everingham struck a maximum to reduce the deficit before falling next ball.  Two further wickets then fell to leave Upminster nine down with four runs still required, but four byes gave Upminster a one wicket win with just seven balls to spare.

There was also success in a County competition for the U12s, who beat Woodford Wells by 74 runs in the last 16 of the Brian Taylor Trophy.  William Peck made 36 for Upminster before Johnny Johal smashed 78 from 72 to take Upminster to 226-8 from their 30 overs.  Wells never looked like reaching their target and Kayhan Suneel picked up 4-18 as Wells were bowled out for 152.

There were also Sunday morning wins for the U10 Ultras, the U9 Ultimates and the U13 Ultimates, and a narrow three run defeat for the U9 Ultras in the Central Cup semi final.  The U8 Ultras missed out at Billericay while the U7s took part in a brilliant festival at Ingatestone.
