SUNDAY REVIEW - 25th MAY

Tough afternoon for women's sides but Sunday League XI stay in contention

A disappointing performance with the bat saw the Women's 1st XI fall to a heavy defeat at leaders Bishops Stortford on Sunday. Having been asked to bat first Upminster found themselves 32-6 as Evie Matthews tore through the top order. Coco Thomas and Dani Cox looked to have turned things around as they took Upminster to 60 without further loss, but the last four wickets then fell for 10 runs as Upminster were bowled out for just 70. Captain Zoe Quested picked up a wicket for Upminster early in the Stortford reply, but Matilda Prince and Eva Cullen saw their side to a nine wicket win without any further alarms.

Despite an excellent performance with the ball the Women's 2nd XI also fell to a loss against Wanstead and Snaresbrook in Division 2. When Wanstead opener Keha Mehta was dismissed by Priya Somani for 22 she may not have expected her score to be the only double figures contribution of the entire match, but that is how things turned out. Somani went on to claim 3-12 for Upminster, and with Shaniya Popat claiming amazing figures of 4-2 in just a single over, the visitors fell from 75-4 to 78 all out at Coopers School. Unfortunately for Upminster, Mehta made an even bigger contribution with the ball, picking up 5-6 as Upminster slumped from 15-1 to 29 all out to fall to a defeat by 49 runs.

The Sunday League XI stayed in title contention with an excellent all round performance against Buckhurst Hill at Upminster Park. Ollie Burley (3-18) put Upminster on top with an excellent spell but Hossam Uddin played nicely to make 78 from 76 balls before being dismissed by Henry Hanlon. Hanlon went on to claim 2-54, and with the rest of Upminster's attack of Jamie Green, Mo Ahmad, Michael Pedrick and Patrick Gulvin all picking up a wicket apiece, Hill were restricted to 209-9 from their 40 overs. U14 George Sheridan then produced his best senior knock to date, making an excellent half century, and with support from Ahmad (22) and the experienced Ian Munn (52) Upminster moved into a good position at 120-1. Kai Mistry and Aryan Jain claimed two wickets each to peg Upminster back to 153-5, but Burley and captain Callum Berry showed there was no need to panic. Berry made a brilliant 55 not out, from just 33 balls, and with Burley keeping him company to end on 15 not out, Upminster won by five wickets with plenty of time to spare.

There were impressive morning wins for the U12 Girls (at Harold Wood) and the U13 Ultimates (at Gidea Park and Romford) and a narrow home defeat for the U15s against Chelmsford.
