STILL LOTS TO PLAY FOR

STILL LOTS TO PLAY FOR

Paul Middlemiss13 Aug - 12:24

Just two weeks to go for majority of Saturday sides

There are now just two weeks of the season to go for our first five Saturday sides, and only one for our teams in the Mid Essex League.

Here we take a look at what is still to play for as the season reaches its climax

1st XI:
Current Position – 3rd
Highest Possible Finish – 3rd
Lowest Possible Finish – 7th
Next Game: Springfield (A)
Final Game: Loughton (H)

It’s been an up and down season for the 1st XI, with a slow start followed by a good run and one or two poor performances amongst some excellent ones. The top two in the division (Loughton and Epping) are promoted already, and therefore cannot be caught by Upminster or anyone else, but after two excellent wins in the last two games Aaron Beard's side look like favourites for third place, but face two tough games to finish the season.

2nd XI:
Current Position – 7th
Highest Possible Finish – 4th
Lowest Possible Finish – 10th
Next Game: Chingford (H)
Final Game: Billericay (A)

Another side who made a slow start to the season were the 2nd XI, and they are still fighting to get away from the relegation zone as we move into the final two matches. It is now two from four at the bottom, with Chingford, Woodford Wells, Hornchurch and Upminster separated by just 18 points, and three of those split by just a single point. Upminster's loss to Ilford on Saturday was disappointing, but they can make amends this weekend when they face Chingford in a huge encounter.

3rd XI:
Current Position – 3rd
Highest Possible Finish – 1st
Lowest Possible Finish – 3rd
Next Game: Ilford (A)
Final Game: Chingford (H)

Saturday's loss at Harold Wood may prove to be a crucial one, with Upminster now needing to win both their final games and hope Wood and Brentwood slip up. Upminster have what look to be two very winnable games, so Dan Simpson's side won't have given up hope of a fourth title in seven seasons just yet, but the destiny of the trophy is now out of their hands.

4th XI:
Current Position – 10th
Highest Possible Finish – 6th
Lowest Possible Finish – 10th
Next Game: Orsett & Thurrock 3s (H)
Final Game: Hutton 3s (A)

It’s always tough for the 4th XI competing against the 3rd XIs of some of the biggest clubs in the County, and this season has been no different. Saturday's loss to Oakfield Parkonians means this weekend's clash with Orsett is win or bust, with Orsett sitting in eighth position in the table. Matt Ingleson's side will need to win that one and their final game at Hutton, who are also in the relegation zone at this time, to preserve their eight year stay at this level for another year.

5th XI:
Current Position - 5th
Highest Possible Finish – 3rd
Lowest Possible Finish - 7th
Next Game: Hornchurch 4s (H)
Final Game: Orsett and Thurrock 5s (H)

Aalok Latey's side picked up an excellent win against Belhus on Saturday to raise hopes of a top half finish. The move from West Division to East Division has provided the 5s with new opponents and new challenges which has made for an enjoyable season, and they will be aiming to further climb the table in the coming weeks.

6th XI:
Current Position - 7th
Highest Possible Finish - 7th
Lowest Possible Finish – 8th
Next/Final Game: Basildon and Pitsea (H)

Having moved into the Mid-Essex League for 2025, the 6s have enjoyed a solid first season in their new surroundings. Some notable wins have been recorded against the likes of Writtle and the side have enjoyed playing at different grounds against new opponents. With one game to go the side will now definitely finish in seventh or eighth place in the table.

7th XI:
Current Position - 9th
Highest Possible Finish - 7th
Lowest Possible Finish - 10th
Next/Final Game: Great Totham (H)

It's been one step forward and and two steps back for the 7s in recent weeks, summed up by beating high-flying Chelmsford Super Kings before losing to mid-table Galleywood in their recent home game. Saturday's loss at St John's was no surprise, but the team picked up enough points to just about keep their relegation fight alive. They have to win their final game and hope Rankins lose, or win their final game against Totham by enough of a margin that they can catch their opponents.

Women's 1st XI:
Current Position - 4th
Highest Possible Finish - 4th
Lowest Possible Finish - 5th
Next/Final Game: Bishops Stortford (H)

Woodford Wells' concession to Upminster last weekend means Zoe Quested's side cannot now finish bottom, and they have actually climbed a place in the table with one game to go. They will want to finish well against Bishop's Stortford, but it will be a tough ask against a side needing a win to claim the title.

Women's 2nd XI:
Current Position - 6th
Highest Possible Finish – 4th
Lowest Possible Finish - 6th
Next/Final Game: Billericay (H)

An absolutely brilliant run chase at Nutter Lane two week's ago saw Upminster overcome Wanstead & Snaresbrook and keep alive their hopes of climbing off the bottom of the table. They face one more match, a daunting one against leaders Billericay, but the 2s will be keen to finish with a positive performance.
