It was an excellent afternoon for the club with six wins from eight games played, including an important first win of the season for the 2nd XI over bottom of the table Wanstead & Snaresbrook.
The 1st XI picked up what turned out to be a comfortable win at Hadleigh & Thundersley, but it hadn't looked that way for much of the afternoon as the home side made things difficult for Aaron Beard's side. Beard had won the toss and asked the home side to bat and they made a good start through Tom Rollinson and Jack Wagstaff who put on 63 for the first wicket at a run a ball before JJ Smuts came into the attack and removed Rollinson for 23. Wagstaff continued to look in good form in partnership with Billy Corps for company and the opener soon reached his half century before falling shortly after for 60, Smuts striking again. Corps fell for 39 when he was smartly stumped by Adam Wheater off the bowling of Shafiq Rahman and when Gus Philpot bowled home skipper Ollie Smith the home side were 160-4 and Upminster looked to be on top. However, Ruben and Kian Vapiwala put together an excellent fifth wicket partnership which took the home side beyond 200 and seemingly towards a huge total. Rahman made the breakthrough Upminster needed to remove Kian and Jamie Green removed Ruben as Upminster fought back once more. The home side eventually closed on 270-8 which looked a challenging total but one that was maybe 20 to 30 runs below what it looked like being at one stage.
Pulkit Gupta and Kiran Kullar made a watchful start in reply before Gupta cut loose to hit Ishen Patel for four consecutive boundaries to get the scoreboard moving. Gupta was then given out caught behind off Ethan Rogers in strange circumstances and Rogers struck again soon after to remove Kullar as Upminster fell to 52-2. The home side were buoyant at that point but Smuts and Philpot rebuilt without to many alarms, Smuts was hitting the ball with power down the ground and hit one maximum over the netting at long on, and it was something of a surprise when having reached his half century he was well caught in the deep for 55 to leave Upminster 150-3. Adam Wheater joined Philpot and immediately found the boundary while Philpot reached his half century as Upminster started to regain control. The second drinks break gave Hadleigh an opportunity to regroup but it was Upminster who came back out firing as both batters looked to move the game forward quickly. Philpot struck a maximum straight into the sightscreen as the finish line came into sight while Wheater lifted a huge six over mid wicket having just brought up his half century. It was left to Philpot to hit the winning runs as Upminster won by seven wickets with more than 10 overs to spare, Philpot finishing on an excellent 92 not out and Wheater ending 69 not out from just 37 balls.
A brilliant unbeaten century from Harry Jenkins helped the 2nd XI to a much needed win over Wanstead & Snaresbrook at Upminster Park. Jenkins struck 129 not out, from 124 balls, as Upminster chased down what looked like a challenging target with some ease. Wanstead had earlier won the toss and decided to bat first and they reached 177-1 thanks to Pavan Patel (44), former Upminster man Nabeel Aziz (80) and Zafer Saiyed (42). However, when Saiyed fell to Vansh Mehra the game changed completely with Mehra and Ollie Peck running through the middle order as the visitors collapsed to 180-6. Finlay Chesney-Brown and Mehran Sanwal rebuilt with a stand of 49 but Andrew Berry and Scott Simmons returned to the attack to run through the lower order as bottom of the table Wanstead were all out for 249. Peck ended with 3-44 while Mehra, Simmons and Berry claimed two wickets each. Jenkins dominated an opening stand with Aki Rahman (25) at the start of the Upminste reply and then put together an excellent partnership with Michael Pedrick for the second wicket. Pedrick took some time to find his feet but when he did he looked in excellent form and batted with great maturity to take the game away from Wanstead. Pedrick fell for 44, one of two victims of Tarun Sharma, but Mehra provided good support as Jenkins neared three figures and the experienced opener brought up the landmark from 104 balls. Mehra went for 26 just before the end while Jenkins ended 129 not out, a knock which included 15 fours and one maximum, as Upminster cruised to a seven wicket win with eight overs remaining.
The 3rd XI put in a good all round performance to beat Hornchurch in the derby at Coopers School. The undoubted start of the day for Upminster was Mark D'Cruz who produced a stunning opening burst with the ball to claim six of the first seven wickets to fall and end with figures of 6-30. The veteran seamer was well supported by an otherwise youthful attack but from 57-7 Hornchurch showed great fight to stay in the game. Mo Khan, batting at eight, smashed 95 from 80 balls, and with the lower order batting sensibly to give him support the visitors were able to lift their total to 160. Steve Limn and George Sheridan fell early in the Upminster reply, but Ethan Berry and Stan Moore added exactly 50 for the third wicket to put Upminster back in control. Khan (3-40) continued his good afternoon to remove both batters and get Hornchurch back in the game before Joseph Brooks began to find boundary as Upminster moved towards the winning line. Brooks ended on 38 not out and with Fenton Everingham adding an unbeaten 15 Upminster won by five wickets.
There was also a convincing run chase for the 4th XI who made it four wins from four with a win at Brentwood. The home side decided to bat first upon winning the toss and their innings fluctuated throughout with both sides fighting to take control. At 106-3 it was Brentwood who looked in the stronger position but Upminster fought back after Nathan Brown removed the dangerous Ben Cocklin for 47. Brown, Ollie Clarke and Shrey Shah all picked up two wickets before Dylan Narbheram bowled superbly at the end of the innings to pick up 4-16 as Brentwood were bowled out for 161. It was then over to skipper Matt Ingleson to lead the Upminster reply as he played his best innings of the season to set the tone for the chase. Ingleson received good support from Rob Mack (35) and Harry Lawes (34*) as Upminster made lightwork of what could have been a difficult chase. The captain ended 72 not out as his side won by eight wickets with more than 20 overs in hand.
The 5th XI fell to their first loss of the season after a disappointing performance against Belhus at Campion. Belhus chose to bat first and a consistent batting performance put them into a good position. Seven batters went into double figures with Ovais Ilyas' 55 the top score. Belhus were kept in check by an excellent spell from Lewis Munn. The spinner claimed 3-10 in an impressive eight over spell, while there were also two wickets for Rob Evans as Belhus closed on 221-6. Upminster were 8-2 in reply before WIlliam Peck and Thomas Cargill got their side back in the game with a stand of 89. Both players reached their half centuries, and with Munn also making 26 Upminster looked in a good position at 138-3. However, Munn's departure triggered a collapse as Upminster tumbled to 165 all out with Puneet Singh Bal claiming 4-13.
The 6th XI made it five wins from five with a win at Southend on Sea & EMT. Kayhan Suneel continued his excellent start to senior cricket with 57 at the top of the Upminster innings while there were also good contributions in the middle order from Dylan Brooks, Matt Burch, Ralph Burchell and Anay Narbheram as Upminster moved towards a big total. Scott Elliot claimed three wickets for Southend but Upminster were happy with their total of 263-9. Woody Treadwell (2-20) bowled well at the start of the Southend reply and the home side were never really in it as all of the Upminster attack bowled with discipline to keep their side on top. Richard Hawkins made 66 but with that knock taking 115 balls it never looked likely to stop Upminster picking up the victory and Southend closed on 157-5 as the visitors won by 105 runs.
An excellent performance from the 7th XI saw them claim a win at Benfleet. Billy Sheridan led the way for Upminster with 50 at the top of the order and there were then eight other double figure scores including 27 from Max Bird and 17 not out from captain Don Triggs as Upmister made 217-8. Ollie Sousanna struck with the very first ball of the reply and Upminster never relinquished control. Triggs was able to rotate eight bowlers, with six of them claiming wickets and Chris Brabin (3-23) and Ralph Moore (2-20) the pick of the attack as Benfleet were all out for 164.
The Friendly XI lost out in their encounter with Belhus at Coopers. Cameron Thorogood (23), Rajveer Nahr (29) and Henry Madsen (38) were all in the runs as Upminster made 164. Michael Cansdale and Shahzor Naveed then made 43 and 44* respectively as Belhus won by eight wickets.
