The results may have been mixed, but there were plenty of runs for the club's batters on Saturday afternoon with three centuries and plenty of other big scores.
There were three wins from the EIGHT games played with one of those coming for the 6th XI who began their Mid-Essex League season with a fine victory at Navestock. Skipper Matt Burch won the toss and asked Navestock to bat and Woody Treadwell picked up an early wicket before further wickets from Anay Narbheram and Nathan Brown left the home side at 78-3. Phil Sergeant made 65 to help Navestock recover and despite further wickets for Harry Bradford and Billy Sherdian a fine innings of 60 from Ross Glumart saw the home side close on 229-5. Two wickets from Duncan Fielding left Upminster in trouble at 58-3 at the start of the chase before Joseph Brooks and Liam Robertson began to rebuild. The pair added 85 for the fourth wicket to put Upminster on top before Brooks fell for an excellent 55 and the skipper joined Robertson. Robertson reached his half century and was beginning to up the run rate while Burch gave solid support as Upminster closed in on victory. Robertson brought up his first century for the club with a single from his 84th delivery and although Burch fell for 25 Upminster were nearly at the winning post. Lewis Munn joined Robertson, having kept very neatly earlier in the day, but it was the centurion who struck the winning runs, ending on 102 not out as Upminster won by five wickets with eight balls to spare.
Unfortunately there was no winning start to the 7th XI's Mid-Essex League season, but there was another century to celebrate, with Patrick Gulvin making his maiden ton for the club at Rayleigh. Upminster skipper Don Triggs won the toss and asked the home side to bowl first, and it looked like a good decision as Karim Govani (2-21) and Ed Knight reduced Rayleigh to 68-3. However, the home side began to rebuild and a fourth wicket stand of 105 between John Wright (67) and Jake Deacon put Rayleigh in charge. Gulvin removed Wright but Deacon went on to make 115 as Rayleigh closed on an imposing 270-4 from their 40 overs. Ian Twine fell early in the Upminster reply but Gulvin and Kayhan Suneel, making his senior debut, quickly got their side back in the game. Gulvin found the boundary 17 times in his brilliant innings, and brought up his century from 76 balls as he and Suneel gave their side a chance of a famous victory. Gulvin fell for 104 but Suneel and Joe Hibell kept the chase moving forward. Hibell went with the score on 206 and Suneel was run out for a brilliant 80 as Upminster eventually fell just short, ending on 249-4.
Also in the Century Club was Aki Rahman as the 2nd XI warmed up for next week's league opener with a win over Wanstead & Snaresbrook at Upminster Park. Rahman opened the batting and shared in stands of 48 with Harry Jenkins, 69 with Ian Russell and 80 with Vansh Mehra as Upminster moved into a strong position. Rahman brought up his ton with a late cut to the third man boundary, and having reached the landmark he upped the run rate as he struck a flurry of boundaries. Zoran Suneel looked in good form as the Upminster total went beyond 250 and it looked like Rahman may bat the entire innings before he was stumped for 160 with just ten balls of the innings remaining. Upminster lost a flurry of wickets as they looked for late runs but Suneel ended 42 not out as Upminster completed their 40 overs on 303-7, Marley Smith taking 3-55 for Wanstead. Fin Tolan put Wanstead on the back foot with two wickets at the start of their reply before Pavan Patel led a fightback. Patel received good support from the visitors' middle order but Mehra claimed three wickets to keep Upminster on top and when Ollie Peck trapped Patel in front for 74 Upminster were nearly there. Tolan returned to the attack to claim two further wickets and finish with 4-47 as Wanstead ended on 236-9.
Under 13 William Peck marked his senior debut with a fine innings of 96 as the 4th XI lost a thriller at Fives and Heronians. Peck and Stewart Hammond (37) shared an excellent second wicket stand at Old Chigwellians. Dylan Narbheram looked in good form and provided Peck with good support as Upminster looked to set a big total and when Narbheram fell Rob Evans looked at home as he marked his debut for the club with an excellent innings. Peck was continuing to look in good touch as he neared three figures but with just a few balls of the innings remaining he was caught for a brilliant 96. Evans ended the innings on an unbeaten 50 as Upminster closed on 227-4. Fives got themselves into a good position as they chased victory before Narbheram and Oscar Sousanna picked up two wickets each to get Upminster back into the game. The experienced Gary Edwards remained at the crease though and looked to be taking Fives to victory before Michael Jones (4-47) produced a late burst to give Upminster hope. However, Edwards kept his nerve and finished on 85 not out as Fives won by one wicket with eight balls remaining.
The 1st XI fell to a friendly loss at Shenfield. The home side started well and moved into a good position thanks to Sam Bear, Theo Robinson and Sarthak Kohli, but at 114-1 Robinson was run out and Upminster came back into the game. Shafiq Rahman bowled superbly to pick up 3-47 while Ollie Burley and Max Carter-MIller claimed two wickets each as Shenfield were bowled out for 223. The Upminster reply started well with Pulkit Gupta and Kiran Kullar again looking in good form before a mis-understanding saw Kullar run out with the score on 49. JJ Smuts joined Gupta and immediately looked in good touch and Upminster looked in a good position at 87-1. Gupta fell for 41 and Smuts was bowled by Caleb Seleka for 33 as the visitors fell to 116-5, but Callum Berry looked in good form as he and Tom Daniels rebuilt. Seleka (5-17) was in fine form for Shenfield though and Upminster kept losing wickets as Shenfield took control, and despite 30 from skipper Aaron Beard the visitors were dismissed for 175.
A solid all round performance from the 3rd XI saw them warm up for the league season with a win over Stanford Le Hope at Coopers. Upminster decided to bat first upon winning the toss and after Steve Limn opened up with 29 Arun Kullar made an excellent 50 before retiring. Rob Mack, Michael Pedrick and Fenton Everingham all made solid contributions before Stan Moore smashed 51 from 30 balls before retiring as Upminster made 255. Andrew Berry (2-19) claimed a brace of wickets to put Stanford on the back foot in their reply but the visitors showed plenty of fight as a number of their middle order got starts but could not go on to make a big score. Pedrick took 2-25 and the other six bowlers used all picked up a wicket as the visitors were bowled out for 148.
The 4th XI lost out in their friendly at Aztecs. Matt Mccarthy and Ralph Moore took two wickets each for Upminster while Ekamjit Singh top scored for Aztecs with 67 as they made a commanding 254-7 from their 40 overs. Upminster never got going in their reply, despite Moore completing a fine afternoon with 29, as they were dismissed for 107.
A very youthful 8th XI, containing a number of players making their senior debuts, enjoyed an excellent friendly at Herongate. Lauren Plumb was the pick of the Upminster attack as she claimed 2-25 while there were first senior wickets for Teddy Glensman (2-33), Charles Allen-Monaghan (2-27) and George Ashlin as Herongate were bowled out for 241. Upminster were always up against it in reply but Tinus Stander battled hard and made an excellent 52 as his side were bowled out for 117.
