1s march on, while there are runs galore for other elevens

It was a strange afternoon for the club's senior sides, with four games ending in draws as the flat wickets and warm weather meant that the bat held sway over ball for most of the day.

There was though another win for the 1st XI, one which saw them move into second place in the Division One table.  Nehal Butt and Ollie Todd impressed with the ball to put Upminster on top at Wickford.  However, Huzaifa Umer and Dean Etchells both made impressive half centuries for the home side to keep them in the game and hold up Upminster's charge.  Billy Corps made some late runs for Wickford, but with Butt claiming 3-23 and Todd 2-42 the home team were restricted to 235-8.  That total looked a little under par on what is always a fast scoring ground, and Pulkit Gupta and JJ Smuts put it into context as they began the Upminster reply.  They put on another century for the first wicket, in just 14 overs, before Smuts fell for 79, an innings that included five maximums.  Gupta continued his excellent season with a composed 59, and James Evans and Kiran Kullar made 26 each as Upminster closed in on victory.  It was left to captain Alan Ison to take his side over the line, his unbeaten 39 from just 23 balls seeing Upminster to a six wicket win.

The 2nd XI were left frustrated as they drew with leaders Wanstead and Snaresbrook at Upminster Park.  A brilliant century from Tom Daniels helped Nicky Ison's side to pile up a huge score on another belting track at HQ.  Daniels made 110 from 128 balls, and he put on 150 in 23 overs with the Big Show Josh Lamont, who made 71 from just 54 balls. Oliver White (66) added yet another half century and there were several double figure contributions from the lower middle order as Upminster declared early on 337-6.  Harith Wajid claimed 3-54 for the visitors.  John Curtis and Billy Wright struck early in the Wanstead reply, but Rod Martin and Ali Zeb then booked in for a long afternoon.  They both made centuries and put on 172 for the third wicket as the game moved towards a draw.  Captain Ison removed both men, and quickly claimed a third victim, but Wanstead finished on 297-6 to maintain their lead at the top of the table.

There was also a top of the table draw at Coopers School, as the 3rd XI drew with Harlow, who moved above them to end the day leading the Premier Division.  Andrew Berry and Mark D'Cruz bowled well without any luck at the start of the Harlow innings, but from that point on the bat was certainly in charge.  All of Harlow's top four mad half centuries with Arshad Muhammed making 61, Atif Mustehsam 85, Jon Allen 96 and James Forder 50 not out.  Nick O'Dell picked up two wickets for Upminster, but Harlow closed on an imposing 308-3.  A number of Upminster's top order also got good starts, but could not go on to register a big score.  Steve Limn (41), Dan Simpson (24) and Arun Kullar (29) all looked in excellent touch, but the home side kept losing wickets at important times.  Sam Twine made an excellent 50, and he and Bobby Mack (31) looked to be keeping Upminster in the chase, but when they both fell in the same over Paul Middlemiss and Mark D'Cruz batted out for the draw as Upminster finished on 201-6.

The 4th XI were another side to see their game end in a draw as they faced Hornchurch 3s.  Jake Giddings made a brilliant century for Ian Munn's side and Mark Schofield made 70 to help Upminster to a huge total of 298-6.  That total was always going to be a daunting chase for the home side, and they closed on 220-6.

The only loss of the day came for the 5th XI as they were undone by a one man show against Gidea Park and Romford 4s.  Upminster batted first and Matt Ingleson continued his good season with 74.  Veteran John French made a breezy 49 and stalwart Michael Jones added 31 late on as Upminster totalled 214-9.  Stephen Ashlin impressed with the ball for Park with 4-34.  Upminster probably thought that total was a reasonable one, and it would have been but for Harry Rogers.  Rogers made an unbeaten 126 for Park, and although only one other batsmen passed 20 it was enough to see his side to a three wicket win, despite a brilliant five wicket haul for Upminster veteran Shrey Shah (5-64).

Of all of the day's draws, the most exciting one came in the 6th XI's draw with Shenfield 4s.  George Walshe, Brian Brown and Thomas Cargill all battled hard with the bat as Upminster made their way to 184-9 at Campion School.  Jake Sedgeley and Robert Deverill (73) put Shenfield into a good position, but when Brown dismissed Deverill there was a mini collapse and hopes of an Upminster victory.  Brown, Karim Govani, Joseph Brooks and Harry Bradford claimed two wickets each as Upminster fought-back, and the start of the last over saw Shenfield needing five runs for victory and Upminster needing one wicket.  Shenfield managed three runs but Upminster could not claim the final wicket as the visitors closed on 183-9.

There was also a win for the Sunday Friendly XI in their contest at neighbours South Weald.  Sam Twine, Oliver White (again), Ryan Brown and Nathan Brown all made retired half centuries as Dave Brown's men piled up 299-1.  Weald batted well in reply but closed on 195-9 to give Upminster a comfortable victory.
