After last week's excellent win over Gidea Park and Romford, the 1st XI came crashing back down to earth with a heavy defeat at morning leaders Loughton. Upminster won the toss and chose to bat first on a sweltering afternoon and when they reached 42-1 they were seemingly moving themselves into a good position. The dismissal of one of last week's centurions, Ian Russell for 17, brought about a dramatic collapse as the visitors fell to 76-6, with top scorer Kiran Kullar (23) and skipper Aaron Beard (18) amongst the wickets to fall. Nehal Butt and Gus Philpot showed some resistance with a defiant seventh wicket stand, but when they fell the home side mopped things up quickly as Upminster were bowled out for 101. Beard picked up an early wicket in the Loughton reply, but from that point onwards only the gathering clouds looked like they could halt the home side's charge, which for a brief period they did. However, when play resumed Hamza Ahmed and Sagar Joshi took Loughton to a comfortable eight wicket win.
The 2nd XI picked up a much needed win with a home success in a high scoring encounter against Woodford Wells at Upminster Park. Wells won the toss and decided to bat first and despite losing an early wicket to Andrew Berry they began to move themselves into a good position. Harry Neicho (52) and Haider Zaman (38) batted solidly before both fell to Ollie Peck but the fireworks really began when Kyuren Chetty came to the crease. At that stage Wells had probably been looking for a total of around 250, but as Chetty began to cut loose it became clear they may go beyond that. The Wells batter finished on an unbeaten 118 and despite Peck claiming 3-79 the visitors were able to post a total of 284-5 and declared an over early. Harry Jenkins and Mit Shah got the home reply off to a blistering start, and although Jenkins fell for 44 Aki Rahman and Shah combined to keep the chase on track. Shah looked set to make his first century at 2nd XI level until he was bowled for a superb 96 and Upminster still had work to do. Rahman stood firm though and was joined by John Curtis who looked in good form. Both men passed 50 as Upminster closed in on victory and although Curtis fell for 52 Upminster won by seven wickets with nearly five overs to spare, Rahman ending on an unbeaten 67.
It was a similar story for the 3rd XI whose win at West Essex ensured they stayed very much in the title race. Upminster decided to take on the heat and bowl first and Ryan Oakes and Mark D'Cruz bowled superbly to keep West in check. Oakes picked up four wickets and D'Cruz three, but consistent efforts all the way down the order meant the home side were able to reach 251 before being bowled out with five overs not used. Opener Steve Limn continued his excellent form with 43 at the top of the order while captain Dan SImpson was in good touch as Upminster moved into a good position. Will Frost made 36 and Simpson reached his half century as Upminster stayed in control, but when the skipper fell for 71 the visitors collapsed from 158-1 to 175-6. At that stage West were probably slight favourites, but Joshan Narbheram and Jordan Tolan soon tilted things back in Upminster's favour. Tolan made 49 not out, from just 25 balls and Narbheram added an unbeaten 18 as Upminster won by four wickets with plenty of time to spare.
The 4th XI picked up a draw in a cagey encounter against promotion chasing Hutton 3s at Coopers. Captain Matt Ingleson made a solid 48 for the home side before Rob Healy's 54 kept Upminster on course for a challenging total. Matt Mccarthy contributed 40 in the middle order before a late burst of 45 from 33 from Ethan Berry took the total beyond 250 as Upminster posted 264-7. Hutton's top four all made meaningful contributions in the reply, but they were always behind the rate as the Upminster bowlers stuck to their tasks well. Alex Holloway upped the run rate for Hutton and brought the chase back to life, but he had been left with too much to do, and despite him finishing on 86 not out from 52 balls Hutton ended on 258-4.
A poor start to the afternoon proved costly for the 5th XI as they lost out to Hornchurch Athletic in their derby encounter at Campion. Upminster lost five early wickets to fall into trouble, before Ollie Hinton (36) and Yasir Ali Bhatti (22) repaired some of the damage. Aedan Daly then continued the fightback with an excellent 42 before becoming one of three victims for Imran Ahmed, while Dylan Narbheram also added some late runs (28) to take Upminster to 189 all out, which was a real recovery from where they were. Athletic’s top three all made meaningful contributions to get their chase off to a solid start, but Upminster kept chipping away with Narbheram, Tinus Stander and captain Aalok Latey all taking two wickets each. Ahmed made 35 in the middle order for Athletic and Christopher Jones made 29 not out to see his side to a four wicket win with plenty of time to spare.
The 6th XI fell to defeat against top of the table Boreham Royals in Division 8 of the Mid Essex League. Jilani Mohammed dropped anchor for the home side making a solid 59 at the top of the order, before Ace Khan added a more flamboyant half century in the Boreham middle order. Upminster's bowlers did well in the sweltering heat, with youngsters Oscar Sousanna and Aadit Latey both picking up three wickets each, but Boreham were able to reach 227 before being bowled out in the 38th over. Upminster's reply never really got going and it was only a late partnership between Sousanna (20) and Chris Brabin (21) which enabled them to reach a respectable 162 all out.
There was a thrilling win for the 7th XI as they overcame St Johns in Division 9 of the Mid Essex League. George Sheridan made an excellent 49 for Upminster before Liam Robertson peppered the passing cars on Broxhill Road with an entertaining 31. Captain Craig Grote then took control for the home side. The skipper hit six fours and five maximums before falling for a brilliant 79, but with Sanjay Narbheram adding a late 22 not out Upminster reached a challenging 252-5 from their 40 overs. Anil Kumar (47), Bala Aditya Kalabarigi (55) and Nithin Karingattikkal (38) all made runs for St Johns but Upminster's young attack (15 year old Ollie Dignam was the oldest bowler used) bowled with huge skill and maturity to keep the run rate in check. The visitors needed 63 from the final five overs, and Pramod Yadav briefly threatened to make that happen before being run out, and Upminster did enough to eventually pick up a 21 run win, with Dignam, Sheridan and Oscar Hayes all picking up two wickets.
The Saturday Friendly XI made their first appearance of the season and picked up a win in an excellent game against Springfield 5s. Opener Ian Twine made 35 before Matthew Castellette made a brilliant 69 from just 56 balls to put Upminster in a good position. Zach Lawes made 33 in the middle order before captain Joe Farrell made 16 as Upminster reached 189-8 from 35 overs. Springfield opener Anshu Kar made 54, but when he was dismissed by Joshua O’Sullivan the Springfield chase lost momentum. Ralph Moore then took control for Upminster, producing a brilliant spell of 4-17 to tear through the Springfield batting. Springfield’s young side showed lots of fight to ensure they batted their full allocation of overs, but they ended on 139-8 to give Upminster a 50 run win.
