MEET THE COMMITTEE – KEVIN ROOME

MEET THE COMMITTEE – KEVIN ROOME

Paul Middlemiss8 Mar - 09:00

We catch up with members of the UCC Committee

With a membership of around 1,000, and with more than 550 games of cricket played each year, the work needed to run Upminster Cricket Club in the modern era is a huge task. To support this the club is lucky to have 27 volunteers who fulfil 43 positions on the club’s committee and sub-committees.

Spring is obviously a busy time for all of these people, with preparations being made for the season ahead, but during March we will be introducing you to eight of these officers as they explain the roles they play within the club.

Last week we caught up with Karen Burley and James Evans and now we catch up with one of the club’s longest serving committee members, Kevin Roome:

What are your current roles on the committee??
Men’s Fixture Secretary and IT Officer

What do those role entail??
The Men's Fixtures Secretary role now involves arranging dates for those sides playing in competitions where a date needs arranging for their games (Sunday League XI, Sunday League T20 and Jeff Rodrigues Trophy) and trying to find games for sides that require opposition when we have the numbers for friendlies (Saturday and Sunday Friendly XIs).

The IT Officer is a much-evolved role and it is now making sure that both the Pitchero and Play-Cricket websites are running smoothly and giving the officers, captains and team managers the access they need and, in the case of Play-Cricket, making sure we have all the information required in place to meet various league deadlines.

You’re one of the longest serving committee members. When did you first join the committee??
I started on the committee in 2001 after suggesting that we may need the already rapidly developing IT side of things, such as the website, looked after.

You’ve also played regularly for the club for more than 30 years. What are your favourite memories from your time playing??
There are many from over the years, including getting to open the batting against Cranham in 1997 after they were bowled out for one and playing a decent role in winning leagues with the 5th XI in 2002, 4th XI in 2008, and most recently with the 3rd XI in 2023. Also, the traditional Sunday 2s away friendlies, with a pub lunch before the match, were often very good days out.

How have things changed at the club during your long association with it??
The club has seen an amazing transformation from the times when we were struggling to get sides out to where we now have multiple men's and women's teams and a junior section of a size that wouldn't have seemed possible years ago. It is a credit to all those who have been involved over the years in getting the club to where it is now.

What are your plans playing wise for 2026??
I hope to play regularly on a Saturday in the lower sides, with the friendly side on a Sunday and hopefully pick up a Windmill Whack gig at the auction night!!
