Results wise it was another disappointing Saturday, but there were more positive signs on show which give hope for the weeks ahead. The 1st XI finally made it onto the field for a league game, but suffered a 39 run loss at Billericay. Matthew Bell made 77 not out and Rowan Elliot 73 as Ricay accelerated late in their innings to post 284-5 from their 50 overs. John Curtis picked two wickets for Upminster. James Evans fell early in the visitors' reply, but Tom Daniels and Kiran Kullar rebuilt steadily. Daniels fell for 23 but Kullar went on to bring up a half century before being run out. The loss of wickets saw the run rate climb, and despite the best efforts of Nehal Butt, Ollie Todd and Ollie White, Upminster fell short of their target.
There was also a loss for the 1st XI on Sunday, despite a spirited performance in the Conference Cup at Dartford. Muhammad Ahmad made his first competitive fifty for the club and Butt was in the runs once more as Upminster made 190-7 in 45 overs. The home side looked to be coasting to victory but Max Carter Miller and Shaffiq Rahman hauled their side back into things before Dartford squeezed to a two wicket win.
The 2nd XI lost a close contest to Chingford at Upminster Park on Saturday. Harry Houldsworth contributed 89 and Ayaz Shah made 57 as Chingford reached 257-7 despite 2-37 from Mark D'Cruz. Dangerman Josh Lamont fell in the first over of the Upminster chase but Aki Rahman made 69 to keep Upminster in the hunt. Chingford's bowlers ensured the run rate started to climb and although Mit Shah and Andrew Berry took the game to the last over, Upminster fell short by 18 runs.
One of only two wins on Saturday came from the 3rd XI who just about kept their nerve to beat Frenford by five runs. Captain Dan Simpson led from the front with 90 from 92 balls, while Mark Schofield made 53 to help Upminster towards a big score. Youngster Rob Healy then made his first half century for the club, finishing on 52 not out from 46 balls as Simpson's side reached 250-5. Shrey Shah took two wickets as Frenford fell to 117-4 but Maaz Mehmood and Ahmad Hassan fought-back to give Frenford a real chance with ten overs to go. However, Schofield capped a brilliant day by coming into the attack and claiming 5-57 to guide his side to a thrilling five run win.
The 4th XI showed glimpses of their capabilities, but ultimately fell to a second successive loss against Orsett and Thurrock. Avanish Ajmani took three wickets as Orsett fell to 43-3, before Dhruv Solanki (60) and Jeff Chandler (67 from 46 balls) took their side to a more than competitive 237-6. Paul Middlemiss made a watchful 69 for Upminster, and there were good contributions from Matt Mccarthy and Garry Carr, but Orsett's well drilled attack meant Upminster were only able to reach 183-6.
A remarkable game at Campion saw the 5th XI move to the top of the table with a win over Old Brentwoods. With Upminster at 74-9 it looked like an early finish was on the cards, but captain and number 11 Aalok Latey joined Ryan Oakes and they put on 72 for the last wicket to take their side to a total of 146. The same two men then combined to take out the Brentwoods' top order, with Oakes claiming four wickets and Latey three. Naveen Pradeep and Siva Kumar then looked to have tilted the game back in the visitors' favour, but Nathan French claimed two late wickets to help his side to a ten run win.
The 6th XI narrowly missed out on their first win of the season in the local derby at Harold Wood. Wood's total of 173 looked about par but despite 71 from Ray Calder and 26 from Issac Horsley, Upminster ended on 152-5.
