Michael Pedrick becomes first recipient of new honour

Saturday's Dinner and Dance saw the announcement of the first ever winner of the Gwynne Mack Spirit of Cricket Award.

A Life Vice President of the club, and our former Chairman, Gwynne sadly passed away in November 2021. Gwynne joined the club in the mid 80s and played a crucial role in the club's rejuvenation through the mid 90s. He went on to serve as the club's Chairman for six years from 2010 and was made a Life Vice President of the club on retiring from "official duties" in 2015. He was also the only person in the club's history to win the Club Person of the Year award on three separate occasions.

During his time at the club Gwynne, who was a teacher by profession, was famed for the way in which he always encouraged younger players to participate in the game. A huge number of players still playing at the club to this day were helped in their early years of senior cricket by Gwynne, who would ensure that their cricketing experience was an enjoyable one and who would always make sure his sides played the game the right way.

To recognise Gwynne's huge contribution to the club over more than 30 years, his wife Jackie has donated a sparkling new trophy which will be awarded each year to the winner of the Gwynne Mack Spirit of Cricket Award. Jackie wanted to ensure that Gwynne's memory at the club will live on, and all at the club would like to thank her for this very generous contribution.

Gwynne's four sons, Rob, David, Jeff and Steve, who have been members of the club for many years said "It's nice that Gwynne's memory will live on at the cricket club where he spent many happy years, and where he got all of us into cricket at the same time."

The annual winner of the award will be a young club member who displays the Spirit of Cricket on or off the pitch each year, as Gwynne did throughout his time at Upminster.

The 2022 winner was named on Saturday evening as Michael Pedrick. "Micky P" as he is known to everyone at Upminster, is a constant presence around the club in the summer months. As well as being a loyal and enthusiastic member of the U15s squad, Michael is always prepared to help out around the club in any way he can. When the 1st XI needed a scorer this year Michael stepped up to assist, and he can often be found spending his Sundays scoring or umpiring a colts game or a Windmill Whack contest. Midweek evenings will regularly see Michael assisting our coaching team with a training session for our younger colts, while during the 2022 season "Micky P" also made his first ever half century in senior cricket, batting the entire Upminster innings in the process. Everyone at Upminster Cricket Club would like to congratulate Michael on winning this very special new award.

Other young club members who were also nominated for this year's accolade were Fred Williams, Harry Bradford, Bethany Law and Patrick Gulvin. The club's committee are sure that Gwynne would have approved of this year's winner, and of the nomination of all these young players.
