ESSEX SMASH T20 FINALS DAY - PREVIEW

ESSEX SMASH T20 FINALS DAY - PREVIEW

Paul Middlemiss24 Sep 2021 - 10:43

Curtis leads Upminster side in search of second T20 trophy

More than five months after the season started, Upminster will look to crown a hugely successful season with one more piece of silverware at Rainham on Saturday. With the club's senior sides already having secured two trophies so far this summer, and the colts sides walking off with six gongs after a busy season, it would be a great way for the club to round off the 2021 campaign.

The Essex Smash has been a huge success in its first year and a massive thank you must go to Jon O'Neill and all at Rainham for coming up with the idea and then organising the competition. With the Essex League T20 competition now limited to just 16 clubs there has been a void for other clubs T20 wise over the last few years, and this new event has more than filled that gap. The weather could have been kinder for a number of games but some thrilling contests have taken place and Jon and his team have made sure the competition has run smoothly throughout.

Upminster have been in good form in the competition so far this summer, having recorded five wins from five games to date. In Group B they started with a win over Old Brentwoods in a high scoring contest, followed that up with a victory at Stanford Le Hope, saw off Newham in a rain affected contest at Upminster Park, and then overcame Rainham in a closely fought match to top the group. Those results meant a quarter final tie with Goresbrook at Upminster Park and in an extraordinary contest Upminster came out on top in a match which saw 410 runs scored for 14 wickets!!!

In Saturday's semi final Upminster will face up to Epping who overcame host club Rainham in the quarter finals to make it to Finals Day. Epping have themselves enjoyed an excellent season, securing second spot in Hamro Foundation Essex League Division 3 to gain promotion to Division 2. In the other semi final, Orsett and Thurrock will take on Barking. Orsett overcame Old Brentwoods in their quarter final, while Barking beat Frenford in a local derby to take the final spot in the last four.

John Curtis will lead the Upminster side on Saturday and he will be hoping his young side can follow up on the Sunday League T20 crown they claimed back in August. On that occasion Upminster's young side showed their potential with a brilliant performance to see off Waltham, and the likes of Tom Daniels, Nehal Butt, Ellis Pickering and Ollie Todd will be hoping to finish excellent individual seasons with one (or hopefully two) more champagne moments to take their side to victory.

The first semi final between Orsett and Thurrock and Barking will begin at 10.30am and Upminster will then take on Epping at 1.00pm. The two winners will then face off in the Final which will start at 3.45pm. The bar at Rainham will be open throughout the afternoon and all support would be welcome. Rainham's Spring Farm Park ground is located at RM13 9SS and parking is in Lambs Lane North or MacLennan Avenue.

We are awaiting confirmation as to whether the semi final will be available on a stream and will confirm these details on our social media platforms when we have them.
