Excellent start to the league season for Upminster

The 1st XI faced a seemingly tough challenge against Ilford at Upminster Park, but put in an excellent all round performance to win by 38 runs.  In a game reduced to 35 overs per side due to the morning rain, Upminster batted first and saw Kiran Kullar continue his fine early season form with 62.  James Evans made 39 as Upminster built a solid base, before captain Alan Ison struck a brilliant 50 from just 33 balls and Pulkit Gupta made 25 from 17 to help the home side reach 209-3.  John Curtis trapped Nigel Jacobs plumb in front early in the Ilford reply before James Aggio-Brewe picked up two wickets to reduce the visitors to 50-3.  Akhil Anil and Mohammad Ahktar rebuilt with a half century partnership but Ollie Peck removed Ahktar before bowling Hamza Muhammad with the very next delivery as Upminster took control.  Anil went on to make a half century but when Peck also removed him Upminster closed in on victory.  The Chairman finished with 4-37 as Ilford closed on 171-8 to give Upminster victory.

At Harold Wood Park the 2nd XI also started with a victory.  Ehsan Afzal made 58 for Nicky Ison's side but the rest of the Upminster top order failed to fire as the innings struggled to gain any momentum in a 35 overs a side contest.  Terry Wyatt and Josh Lamont provided some much needed late innings impetus before Ellis Pickering hit 33 from just 11 balls, including four maximums, to lift the total to 193-9.  Debutant Ollie Todd struck twice early on for Upminster and with Pickering also claiming an early scalp the home side fell to 12-3.  Christopher Bennett led the fightback for Wood with 61, but Upminster never relinquished control and Pickering claimed 3-34 as Ison's men won by 32 runs.

The 3rd XI game at Wanstead & Snaresbrook was unfortunately called off due to the wet weather, but the 4th XI contest between the two clubs went ahead at Coopers and Upminster came out on top.  Captain Ian Munn looked in fine form as he made 61 and Pete Thompson was also in good touch as he struck 52.  Tom Hilson and Luke Williams hit some late boundaries as Upminster finished on 185-5.  Pavan Patel and Bilal Dar made a brilliant start to the Wanstead reply as they put on a century stand, but the introduction into the attack of the evergreen Ant Limn changed the game.  He removed both openers and soon picked up a third wicket as Upminster found a way back into the contest.  Luke Williams and Harry Bradford also claimed two wickets each as the visitors collapsed and Upminster eventually ran out winners by 30 runs.

The only loss of the entire weekend was the 5th XI defeat at Oakfield Parkonians.  Mark Hortop, Alex Bottoms and Nathan Brown were all in the runs, but with the game reduced to 35 overs per side the Upminster total of 137-3 always looked a little light.  Keerthikan Thangavel made a blistering 69 not out for Parks and although Shrey Shah picked up a wicket Parks raced to victory in the 27th over.

The 6th XI celebrated their return to league action after a 3 year gap with a win over Brentwood at Campion.  Rafe Smallman and Craig Grote got Ray Calder's men off to a flying start as they both hit brilliant half centuries.  Captain Calder (23*), and youngsters Joshan Narbheram (42) and Ibraheem Choudry (15) then added late runs to help the home side to 252-6.  Fellow youngsters Ryan Oakes (2-30), Matthew Ingleson (3-4) and George King all bowled well in the Brentwood reply, but the star man with the ball was John Morley who picked up 5-15 as the visitors were all out for 60.

The 7th XI friendly at Walthamstow fell victim to the weather, but on Sunday the Friendly XI picked up a win at neighbours AGHAB.  Callum Berry made 91 and there were half centuries for Andrew Berry and Ollie White as Upminster piled up 317-5.  But the star of the show was Nathan Brown.  He made an unbeaten 38 and then claimed a brilliant hattrick during the AGHAB innings on his way to figures of 5-27.  Gus Siggins also picked up two wickets as the home side were dismissed for 87.
