Busy weekend with three days of action

The Bank Holiday weekend means there will be a lot of action across three days for Upminster.

On Saturday, the 1st XI go in search of their first league win of the season, as they entertain Loughton at Upminster Park. Loughton are also without a SNEL win this season so both sides will be looking to get off the mark this time out. Ollie Peck’s side showed some positive signs despite a heavy defeat to Shenfield last week, and they welcome back Nathan Woods who returns after a week away.

Nicky Ison will lead the 2nd XI as they travel to Wanstead & Snaresbrook. The 2nd XI are also without a SNEL win to date, but they are also unbeaten!!! They had the better of an opening day draw with Woodford Wells before showing a lot of fight against a strong Shenfield outfit last week to secure another draw. Wanstead started with an opening day thrashing at Brentwood but bounced back in impressive style as they beat Woodford Wells by 9 wickets last week, with centuries from Karan Singh and Adnan Akram. The same game last year saw a thrilling afternoon’s cricket which ended in a tie.

The 3rd XI’s visit to Brentwood already has the look of a hugely significant fixture. Brentwood won the Premier Division title in 2017, with Upminster finishing fourth, while Upminster took the title last Year, when Brentwood finished fourth. Brentwood have two wins from two so far this term and top the table, and right behind them in the table are Upminster with a win and a draw to date. Fixtures between these two sides are more often than not very tight affairs and this game promises to be the same. Young Upminster captain Ollie White has impressed so far this season and he will be looking for his side to put in a good performance in this crucial game.

Hutton 3rd XI will travel to Coopers to face Stewart Hammond’s 4th XI in 3rd XI Division One. Hammond’s side impressed in week 1 with a fine victory over Frenford, but fell to a narrow defeat at Old Southendians last week, despite 64 from Luke Williams. Hutton will be looking for promotion this season, having just missed out in 2018, and they have one win under their belts already this term.

All SNEL games will begin at 12.30pm as normal.

With Harlow Town 3rd XI having pulled out of the League Alex Bottoms’ 5th XI will welcome Oakfield Parkonains 6th XI to Campion for a friendly encounter (12.30pm).

Sunday sees two new opponents on the Club’s fixture list. The 1st XI will travel to Surrey to face Surrey Premier League side Banstead in the Conference Cup (1.00pm) while Dave Brown’s Friendly XI welcome Old Fallopians to Upminster Park (1.30pm).

The 1st XI complete a busy weekend on Monday, when they take part in the Dukes Essex T20 qualifying round at Hadleigh and Thundersley. Upminster have one of the best records in the competition since it began, with six last four appearances and two final appearances, and they face Southend on Sea & EMT in their group semi-final at 1.00pm. The winners of that tie will face the winners of the Hadleigh v Harold Wood tie which takes place earlier in the day.

As well as senior cricket there is also a host of junior games over the weekend. On Sunday morning the U9a and U9b sides face one another in a Havering League fixture at Campion School while the U11b side travel to AG&HB, also in the Havering League. The U12s play their opening Brian Taylor Trophy game, when they play Ilford at Coopers and the U15s play Hornchurch Athletic at Upminster Park.

On Monday the U11a side play Ilford in a crucial Haydn Davies Trophy game while the U13s face Buckhurst Hill in the Len Stentiford Trophy.

All players from Upminster and other Clubs are reminded there will be extra traffic in the area due to the nearby music festival taking place.
