Brown's hat-trick is highlight on damp afternoon

The weather played it's part on a frustrating second Saturday of the league season.

The 1st XI made an excellent start against Ilford at Valentines Park as they reduced the home side to 39-3. However, Saf Imtiaz and Essex first teamer Syed Zaidi combined in a 4th wicket stand of 153 to lead Ilford to a challenging total. They eventually made 196-4 from a reduced allocation of 55 overs.

Upminster's reply started steadily as they reached 38-1, but Zaidi then came to the fore again, this time in tandem with Theeban Tavarasa, as the pair took five wickets each to spin out Upminster for 77. (Scorecard)

Heavy rain between Wednesday and Friday had left the Upminster Park pitch very wet, and just as the game was about to start at 1.30 the rain returned again to washout any chance of play.

The 3rd XI were involved in a tight tussle with Wanstead at Coopers School. On a damp wicket, and with a slow outfield, scoring was difficult throughout the afternoon but Kiran Kullar and Pete Thompson both batted well as Upminster fought there way to 155-8 (from a reduced allocation of 46 overs). Wanstead reached 70-1 in their chase, but when skipper Steve Ramdial was out it led to a collapse as Mark Schofield and Arun Kullar took control. In the end it was Wanstead who needed to bat out the last few overs as they closed at 112-8. (Scorecard)

The only winners of the day were Josh Lamont's 4th XI, who moved to the top of the table after victory over Gidea Park and Romford in the local derby at Gallows Corner.
Rob Banninster picked up four wickets and he was assisted by Tom Larke, Andrew Berry and Karim Govani as Park were skittled out for 101 on a damp track. Upminster slipped to 39-6 as they chased victory, but Bannister and the skipper kept their nerve to take the visitors to a four wicket win. (Scorecard)

The 5th XI were frustrated by the weather as their game at Ilford 4th XI was washed out, and the 6th XI had to settle for a draw with Hornchurch 5th XI. It was though a day to remember for youngster Ryan Brown. He returned career best figures of 6-16..............including a hat-trick!!! Brown's figures helped to restrict Church to 176-9 with the experienced Gary Barnacle making 55. In reply Upminster lost early wickets, but a solid 50 from the evergreen Ian Twine enabled the home side to finish on 142-8. (Scorecard)

Sunday saw the 1st XI return to T20 action with a double header against Chingford and Wanstead, and they kept up alive their hopes of progressing as they recorded one win and one defeat. In the first contest against Chingford, 43 from Shahbaz along with three wickets for Ollie Peck and Scott Fisher helped the home side to a 58 run win. (Scorecard) The second contest was a tighter affair. Louis Pickering and Frankie Hazle batted well to enable Upminster to set a challenging target of 139. Wanstead slipped to 64-5 as they chased victory, but Joe Ellis-Grewal and Robin Das saw their side home with five wickets and two overs in hand. (Scorecard)
