Saturday 28th May 2016 round-up

Alan Isons first XI collected their 2nd league win of the season this Saturday against Harold Wood over Upminster Park. Harold Wood chose to bat first and got off to a promising start and at one stage were 95/1 before the introduction of Matt Tigg and Connor Whetstone. Both bowlers finished on identical figures of 4-55 to tear through the Harold Wood middle order. The last two Harold Wood wickets put on over 50 runs but they were eventually bowled out for 177 in 43.5 overs.

Frankie Hazle top scored in the run chase with a well-made 58 as he formed partnerships with Alan Ison (35) and Harry Jenkins (29*) to see Upminster home to a convincing win. After four league games, Upminster sit nicely placed in third position.

It was another frustrating draw for the 2nd XI on Saturday over picturesque Castle Park. Electing to bat first on a decent looking wicket, it was the same old song for the Upminster batsman with plenty of starts but no batsman passing 50. Jordan Tigg top scored with 33 with three other batsman scoring between 26-30. Upminster finished on a below par 192.

Colchester got off to a lightning start and after 15 overs was well set on 85/1. James Aggio-Brewe provided the control that Upminster needed to stem the run rate and with Billy Wright tightening up the other end, Upminster started to chip away with a few wickets. Six wickets fell in quick succession with Billy Wright picking up four. The 8th wicket pair for Colchester managed to bat out 15 overs together as they finished on 144/7 off 50 overs.

A vintage Andrew Berry display helped the 3rd XI to their fourth successive league win. Fielding first over Coopers School, Andrew rolled back the years as he tore apart the Brentwood top order finishing with 6-66. Brentwood rallied though with Paul Degg scoring 64 and Dave Balroop hitting 77 as they finished on 213 all out.

In reply, 15 year old Alfie James batted with maturity beyond his years as he provided the backbone to a successful chase. Alfie carried his bat through the innings and finished on 74* with great support from Janhoi Bean-Wilson (46) and a quick 32 from Oliver Peck to see Upminster home to victory.

Steve Limns fourth XI manage to hold on for a hard fought drive away to Hainault and Clayhall. Wickets were shared round for the Upminster bowlers with Daniels, Roome and Tom Larke all picking up a brace as Hainault set 170 to win. It was a stop-start innings for Upminster in reply, with plenty of batsman making starts. Dave Cowley top scored with 29 but it wasn’t enough as Upminster fell 19 runs short, 9 wickets down.

Paul Middlemiss continued his fine form with the willow as he made 44 in Upminster 5th XI total of 216 against Wanstead on Saturday. Ansar Khan scored 29 and a returning Sam Langston hit 23 in his first innings for a number of years. Upminster bowled well in reply but failed to get the last two Wanstead wickets for the victory. Will Frost took 3 wickets in two overs and Nathan Bright bowled a controlled 12 over spell, finishing with 2-41.

Paul Scotts 6TH XI was the third Upminster team too fail to bowl out the opposition out in another disheartening draw. Upminster racked up the runs batting first with Jake Giddings and Sohail Iqbal both scoring 84. Sohail also starred with the ball, taking 3-31 in his 12 overs. Youngster Lewis Baker also impressed with figures of 2-33 but it wasn’t enough as Hornchurch finished on 154-8 in 41 overs.
