One win and one loss so far, while U11s are beaten by Shenfield

Competing in the top division of the competition for the first time, they opened their campaign against Wickford. Wickford elected to bat first and made a good start, but they were penned back by Upminster skipper Nicky Ison who picked up 2-6 from his 2.2 overs, as the 2016 runners up were bowled out for 95 in the final over. Upminster suffered an early setback to their response when they were informed they had lost an over from their reply, falling foul to a little known rule around turn around times between innings, and Louis Pickering and Paul Middlemiss then made a solid but slightly laboured start to the innings. Adam Quested got the innings moving with his normal approach of excellent placement and lively running, and when Pickering returned after his retirement he upped the ante to leave Upminster needing 20 from the last over. Six were then required from the last ball but the Upminster batsmen could only make three as they slipped to a two run defeat.

The following week Upminster batted first against Ingatestone and Fryerning and they got off to a fine start as Pickering and Kiran Kullar took the attack to the Ingatestone bowlers. Both reached the retirement mark, as did Quested once again, and this enabled Pickering to return to the crease, and with brother Ellis they took Upminster to an excellent total of 127-3. The older Pickering finished on 42 not out. Captain Ison picked up the crucial wicket of Westwood early in the Ingatestone reply, and Billy Wright and the younger Pickering then worked their way through the middle order as Upminster moved towards what looked like a comfortable victory. Nick Hodgson had other ideas however as he begun to find the back wall and Upminsterā€™s fielding became a little shoddy. Hodgson left himself just to much to do though, and despite finishing on 55 not out Upminster won by 11 runs.
The U11s kicked off their campaign with a defeat against Shenfield. Jamie Green was the pick of the Upminster bowlers with 2-24, but Shenfield made 82-4 from their ten overs. In reply Upminster lost early wickets to put them on the back foot, and although Eesa Famheem made 21 they were bowled out for 48 to lose by 34 runs.
