Three wins and four defeats as league games move to limited overs format

Upminster fielded seven senior sides on Saturday, for the first time this season, and all seven fixtures resulted in wins for the home teams. Unfortunately four sides were playing away from home!!!

One of the sides on the road were the 1st XI and they returned empty handed from a long trip to Colchester. The visitors started well and reduced the home side to 84-3 before a massive fourth wicket stand between Jack Hebron and Jake Foley put Colchester firmly in control. Hebron went on to make 143 as his side reached 326-8 from their 50 overs.

Skipper Matt Tigg and Shahbaz made a positive start in reply but when Shahbaz fell wickets began to tumble. Alan Ison and Julian Whetstone fought back in the middle order before both falling in quick succession and it was left to Will Chuter to smash 51 from 43 balls to lead the visitors to an extra batting point as they were bowled out for 214. There was a home win at Upminster Park as Ollie Peck's side overcame Colchester in the reverse fixture. Farid and Shaffiq Rahman both made half centuries as Upminster made an excellent start and contributions from Nick O'Dell and Terry Wyatt helped the score to 287-7 from 45 overs. The skipper was then in excellent form with the ball, taking four wickets, as Colchester were bowled out for 231 despite 69 from Adnan Hashmi (Scorecard)

There was a thrilling finish in the 3rd XI game at Buckhurst Hill as Upminster lost out by 8 runs. Jack O'Dowd picked up three wickets for the visitors but 52 from Shahid Maan and five other contributions of more than 20 led Hill to 249-7 in 45 overs. Upminster lost wickets regularly in reply but 46 from Nathan Woods and 35 from captain Rob White kept them in the hunt. Aaron Kullar and Mark D'Cruz then got the requirement down to 14 runs from the last over but when Kullar fell Upminster were left just short. (Scorecard)

The 4th XI wasted no time at all in moving 30 points clear at the top of their division, with a 10 wicket win over Wanstead 5s. Karim Govani (5-11) and Oliver White (2-7) tore through the top order to reduce the visitors to 28-9 and despite a brave last wicket stand they were bowled out for just 55. Rob Waghorn and Steve Limn then ensured there would be no drams in the reply as they knocked off the runs without loss. (Scorecard)

There was a much needed home win for the 5th XI, as they overcame Buckhurst Hill at Campion. Youngster Ryan Brown was the star of the show, picking up 5-17 as Hill were dismissed for 133. Paul Stratton then made a well constructed 58 and with help from fellow veteran Stewart Hammond (32*) Upminster won by five wickets. (Scorecard)

There was more disappointment on the road for the 6th XI, but they were involved in an excellent game at Oakfield Parkonians. 88 from George Sadek and runs from Ben Calder and Will Frost enabled the visitors to reach a challenging total of 223-8 from their 40 overs. Casey Adams then picked up four wickets but Parkonians got over the line with two wickets and six balls in hand. (Scorecard)

The 7th XI's first game of the season ended in defeat at Aztecs. Aztecs reached 240, despite two wickets each for Matthew Bright and David Brown, and the visitors were then dismissed for 119, with Brown top scoring with 24. (Scorecard)

There were no senior fixtures on Sunday but Woodford Wells' concession in the Essex League T20 competition saw Upminster progress to the knock out stages.
