Hurricanes suffer shock loss to blow competition wide open

The Apple Finance Firebirds picked up their first win of the 2018 Windmill Whack with an eight run victory over reigning champions the Hunter Hurricanes.

Louis Pickering was in the runs for the Birds, who overcame the early loss of captain Joe Wyatt and new man James Ramsden to move towards a challenging score. Ollie White contributed 22, before being picked up by Guy Robertson, but the Birds made a competitive 125-7 from their 20 overs.

The Hurricanes reply got off to a fast start, but after two quick wickets they began to fall behind the rate. Shaffiq Rahman made 27 but when he fell there was another flurry of wickets, and despite a good partnership from Billy Wright and Mark Hoptop, the Canes could not make up for lost ground and finished on 117-5.

The next Windmill Whack action is on Sunday 24th June with four sides involved in the latest double header, and the England v Panama World Cup game being screened in the Club between the two games.
