Three wins from five games played, including thrilling cup win for 1st XI

It was a positive weekend for Upminster's senior sides as more players entered the fray for the 2017 season.

The highlight of the weekend was undoubtedly the 1st XI's League Cup win over local rivals Brentwood at Upminster Park. Batting first James Evans and Julian Whetstone helped Upminster reach 67 without loss, but a mini collapse left them at 100-3. Alan Ison and Shabaz Butt then joined forces to take Upminster to 161 before Shahbaz fell for 58. Alan was soon joined by brother Nicky and they put together what turned out to be a match winning partnership. Alan made an unbeaten 77 from 72 balls and Nicky an unbeaten 32 from 25 as the home side closed on 256-5.

In reply skipper Matt Tigg spun through the Brentwood top order to reduce the visitors to 36-3 and although James Redwood made an excellent 73 the game looked over at 163-8. However, Max Osborne and Charlie Griffiths launched a final assault and when they reached 237-8 the game was wide open again. However, Conor Whetstone removed Osborne for 31 and Whetstone, John Curtis and Nicky Ison held their nerve in the final few overs before the older Ison dismissed Griffiths in the final over to give Upminster a 9 run victory. The 2nd XI also picked up a pleasing win in the reverse fixture (a friendly) at Brentwood, where Arun Kullar top scored for the visitors and Max Carter Miller and Billy Wright impressed with the ball.

There was a narrow defeat for the 3rd XI as they took on Wanstead at Coopers. Mohammed Soomro impressed with the ball on his debut, but 83 from Bilal Patel helped the away team to make 187-6 from their 45 overs. Kiran Kullar and Rob Waghorn made an excellent start in reply making 39 and 59 respectively, but when they fell the hosts dropped behind the rate and closed on 180-7 to lose by 7 runs. (Scorecard)

The Sunday League side began their campaign with a comprehensive win at Gidea Park and Romford. Louis Pickering picked up three early wickets and the middle order was then spun out by Ollie Peck and debutant Sandeep. Despite a late flurry of runs Park were all out for 123, Kiran Kullar picking up four catches in an excellent keeping display. In reply Paul Middlemiss and Alfie James put together a half century partnership for the first wicket before James fell for a well made 27. Kullar made a breezy 15 before Pickering came to the crease and smashed an unbeaten 23 to take Upminster to victory, with veteran Middlemiss remaining unbeaten on 58. (Scorecard)

The Sunday 2nd XI fell to defeat in a home fixture with Potter Street & Church Langley. Langley amassed 258 on a flat Upminster Park wicket, with Mark Schofield picking up five wickets. In reply Upminster were always up against it, but Andrew Berry made an excellent 60 and with support from Schofield and Alex Halliwell the home side finished on 181-4.
