Upminster B competed in their 4th indoor fixture on Sunday against Havering. Havering won the toss and chose to bat, which didn’t seem like a good decision when Sam Crotch bowled Jackson very first ball. Sam struck again in his next over, once again clean bowling Jack for 1. Havering were making a slow start at 12/2 off 3 overs. Ison, in the next over, was piling on the pressure and ended up taking Upminster’s third wicket, extracting some spin off the mat to bowl Tom through the gate. Tim and Ryan lead Havering’s recovery as they tried to build a score, with Ryan finding the wall twelve times during his knock of 24. UCC Bowler of The Year Billy Wright claimed his first victim since winning the award, bowling Ryan for 24. Havering were eventually bowled out for 64.
Sam Crotch and Michael Ashby opened the batting for Upminster. Sam looked in good touch in the first over. Sadly Michael was to fall first ball in the 2nd over. Captain Ison and Sam were to looking to steady the ship and set the platform for Upminster. However just when Upminster looked comfortable, they kept losing wickets at crucial times, with Sam lofting a catch to the bowler, who took it one handed. Ison and Wright both departed in the space of 2 overs for 9 each. Wright hit a full toss straight back into the bowler’s hands. Ison missed a straight one to put Havering in the driving seat. Father Ashby and Matt were at the crease and proceeded to tick the scoreboard over and edged Upminster closer. Matt was bowled in the penultimate over to leave Glenn with all the work to do with 11 required of the final over. The first ball of the over was driven to the wall for 4, the next ball worked for 3; a dot ball followed by a 2 meant Upminster needed 2 off 2. Glenn smashed the ball into the wall and scenes reminiscent of South Africa in the World Cup 99 began to unfold. Glenn played the role of Allan Donald and not running, Matt expertly playing Lance Klusener and running down to the other end. With both batsman stranded at the same end, Havering whipped off the bails to conclude the match. The result was a tie. A great advert for the game of Indoor Cricket. Upminster B go into the Xmas break 2nd in the table.
