Robert White’s Upminster A took on Nicky Ison’s Upminster B in a friendly inter-club match on Sunday. The A’s won the toss and chose to bowl first. It will be interesting to see if that was the right decision as the match wares on. Ollie Heazel and Adam Quested opened the bowling and kept things tight for the first 3 overs only giving away 8 runs. Matt Ashby being the first wicket to fall; run out smartly from Heazel for 0. Captain Ison was the next man in and started with Sam C to get the innings going. The B’s put on 44 runs in the next 4 overs, both batsman expertly working the ball around, finding the gap regularly and running well. Ison hitting the first maximum of the innings, despatching Chuter to the wall. UCC Colt of The Year Frankie Hazel made the breakthrough having Sam C caught on the drive by Quested. Ison soon reached the retirement figure. Scott Hammond and Craig Chuter kept the scoring going, putting on 30 in the next 4 overs as The B’s were looking at a useful total. Craig was soon run out and was followed to the bench when Quested trapped Hammond LBW. 11 more runs in the last over boosted The B’s to 92. Ison top scoring with 34.
The A’s chase got off to a storming start with 17 of the first over including White hitting his 1st of 6 sixes. Craig showing his experience conceding only 6 in his first over. Ison come into the attack and immediately struck bowling Will Chuter (11) through the gate and clipping off-stump. White continued to take the attack to the B’s bowling, frequently finding the boundary; he soon reached the retirement mark in quick fashion. The B’s then applied the pressure and turned the screw as The A’s lost 3 wickets very quickly. Frankie Hazel slashing to point off Matt Ashby, in the same over Ashby removed Heazel caught by Ison at mid-off. Quested’s painful innings came to an end, clean bowled by Hammond. The A’s needed 45 runs when Whitereturned to the crease and he was in no mood for running as he took 30 runs in the next two overs, hitting 4 sixes during it. Desperate for a wicket, The B’s changed to a 3-1 leg side field and it worked when very first ball White chipped a rank full toss to Sam C, who took a one hand diving catch. White eventually dismissed for a fantastic 60. The A’s were 8 runs from victory when Glenn took off to run on a misfield but some quick work from Hammond ended the game as Glenn was run out. Upminster B’s won by 7 runs.

The A team competed in their latest indoor game on Sunday, a relegation battle against fellow strugglers Goresbrook, who won the toss and choose to bat first. Sam Crotch and Nicky Ison opened the bowling and tied Goresbrook down early on. Ison took Upminster’s first wicket in his second over, beating Rooke in the flight and some sharp work from Fisher behind the stumps removed the Goresbrook opener. Whisker was the next batsman to fall, once again Ison and Fisher combining to run him out for 8. Goresbrook was then 30/3 off 6 overs when Ison quickly run out Burke with a hawk eye direct hit. Upminster’s fielders were on top form when another run out happened in Chuter’s first over to put Goresbrook under the pump. Wright then showed off his Bowler of The Year qualities, only conceding 6 runs from his 2 overs. At 49/4 off 11 overs, Goresbrook were looking at a below par score but a blistering last over that cost Upminster 24 runs took Goresbrook up to very respectable 73.
Chuter and Wright opened the batting and Upminster’s common trend of a slow start continued. Wright was the first to fall caught behind off Rooke for 1. Chuter once again showed his potential, keeping out the Goresbrook first team bowlers whilst playing some lovely drives, a beautiful straight drive for four one of the highlights. Upminster’s innings never got going and was falling behind the rate. Chuter and Ison kept working the ball around but were leaving too much to do in the last couple overs. Chuter eventually retired in the 11th over for 26*. Upminster needed 16 of the last over but it was not to be as Ison (24) and Fisher fell in consecutive balls, which meant Upminster eventually fell 8 runs short. A disappointing result.
Upminster A: R.White (c)- (2*,0-37) N.Ison (24,1-16,2 ro) S.Fisher (0,0byes) B.Wright (1,0-6) W.Chuter (26*,0-2) S.Crotch (0-12,3)
