WEEKEND REVIEW - 7th / 8th AUGUST

1 Details

It was another positive weekend results-wise, with just two defeats for all of our senior sides across the two days.

On Saturday the 1st XI picked up a valuable draw with Colchester.  Runs for James Evans and Akbar Jabhar helped Upminster to reach 281 for 9 from their 64 overs.  The visitors' reply was held up twice by rain, making a positive result either way impossible, and Colchester finished on 163 for 4 when play ended, Naeem Iqbal picking up two wickets.  The result moved Upminster out of the bottom two in the Premier Division table.

The 2nd XI suffered a heavy defeat in their game at Fives and Heronians.  An under-strength side were shot out for 118, with only Paul Bussey and Rob Back making a meaningful contribution.  In reply Chris Ryan and Daniel Tyler picked up an early wicket each to put some pressure on the home side, but Nick Rostey struck a rapid 51 not out to lead Fives to an 8 wicket victory.

Chris Cully's 3rd XI moved out of the relegation zone in the Premier Division with a tense victory over Harold Wood.  Wood were bowled out for 162 and Upminster collapsed to 80-6 in reply.  However, Scott Hammond and Pat Cully combined to steer Upminster to the brink of victory before the rain came!! However, when the rain ceased two more overs were possible and Upminster were able to complete a four wicket victory.   The 4th XI stayed on course for their 4th promotion in 5 seasons with a 2 wicket win over Wickford 3s at Coopers.  Set 179 for victory they scraped home by two wickets to hold on to their advantage at the top of the table.

It was a bad day at the office for the 5th XI as they were well beaten by South Woodford 4s.  South wracked up 246-6 in their 52 overs, despite four wickets from David Staples. In reply none of the top eight managed to reach double figures, and but for Phil Hammond (18) and Will Bottoms (17*) it could have been even worse than the 71 all out they
recorded.

The 6th XI took a giant step towards avoiding the drop with a nine wicket win over Leigh on Sea.  Frankie Hazel was the hero for Upminster recording his second unbeaten half century in three games.  He also had good support from Pete Cox and Matt Tilbury as they eased home with time and wickets in hand.

On Sunday, the 2nd XI were to strong for Leigh on Sea as they wracked up 331 from 40 overs in their Sunday League clash at Upminster Park.  In reply Leigh were bowled out for 163.  The Academy side had to settle for a draw in their game at Brentwood after a swarm of flying ants caused the game to be called to a halt early!!! Upminster had earlier
made 196.

And the U13s continued their impressive form with an easy victory over Newham CC in the Len Stentiford Cup.
